Mathan is a ring of many small worldlets (planetoids AKA an "asteroid belt"), not capable of retaining an atmosphere or water, and are both non-agricultural and nonindustrial in nature.

• These worldlets warrant hazardous environment precautions.
• Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
• They require extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
• The worldlets are, for the most part, unable to produce quality foodstuffs and must import them.
• These worldlets have very few prospect for economic expansion.
• This dangerous world is designated an Amber Zone with an environment, laws, customs, life forms, or other conditions that make it dangerous to visitors.
• This world toils under the control of a military government with conditions reflecting that situation, including curtailed civil rights and limited freedoms.
• It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Cleft Subsector of Harea Sector.

• This world-system has a Military Base, usually associated with military ground forces, which may be located on or off-world.

The two stars of the Mathan system have an average separation of 230 AU and orbit a barycenter that lies between them.

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

• The mainworld, an asteroid belt circling the secondary star.
• x4 secondary rocky worlds, all orbiting the secondary star.
• x2 planetoid belts. Both orbit the huge primary star.
• x4 gas giants, all orbiting the secondary star.

The system lies within the heart of the Separe Cloud.

• Energy radiating from the primary star keeps the system relatively clear of gas.
• This bubble of clear space extends out to as far as the Heliopause.

Mathan is an Asterioid Belt or Planetoid Belt consisting of a few very large objects with diameters of hundreds of kilometers, thousands of bodies of a few kilometers in diameter, and millions of smaller objects. Asteroid Belt is used when the belt is the mainworld of a system. Planetoid Belt refers to any non-mainworld belt within a system.

None of the bodies within the Mathan Belt retain an atmosphere.
