RSS Sh2634 Received Signal Source Shandara Sector 2634.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

An anomalous signal originating from a trinary system centered on a yellow giant star. The signal is occasional, unmodulated, and in the 80-100 MHz range.

  • The primary star of the Kusajat system, a yellow giant, produces powerful EM transmissions. However, the signal appears to originate in the vicinity of the secondary star, a yellow main sequence lying some 330 AU distant.

History[edit]

RSS Sh2634 was detected by the University of Tal Varisa Deep Sky Program. It became public knowledge following publication of the "Where The Stars End" Astrographic Survey in 5550AD. The signal may be being transmitted by a currently unknown advanced sophont NIL or it may simply be a natural phenomenon.

If the signal does originate from a sophont source, a number of different explanations regarding its meaning have been proposed:

  1. It is an indicator of Vilani activity. Given Shandara Sector's position relative to Terra and the Distant Fringe, the signal is not considered likely to have Vilani origins.
  2. A Voyager Beacon, emplaced by the Slavers.
  3. A gravestone or memorial. The final marker of a dead civilization.
  4. The originators of the signal are very different to other sophonts, perhaps dangerously so.
  5. Oblivious. The originators of the signal are unaware of the existence of other sophonts or simply don't care.
  6. Internal Communications. The signal is not intended for outsiders.
  7. Assist Us. A cry for help, though it is probably already too late.
  8. Stay Away.
  9. We're Coming.
  10. Curious. The originators of the signal want to communicate.
  11. A warning to others about a significant threat or danger.
