History & Background[edit]

When a bored group of Esaran doctoral candidates from Kenset (world), begin debating the non-human and pre-human history of the Paradise Subsector, there is literally no end to the amount of trouble they can cause.

Having procrastinated on fully developing their respective doctoral dissertations, a group of talented historians, archaeologists, planetary scientists, crypto-linguists, astronomers, and an odd economics major who all happened to frequent the same local pub, began to discuss their collective dilemma. Over the course of the next week they finally arrived on a plan, they needed an original research project that reflected each of the respective fields and that they could collectively investigate and research.

They applied for an academic research grant to fund a planetary expedition. They wanted to travel, see the stars and essentially get paid to be tourists while doing “research” on local cultures along the way. When members of a rival Canton’s sport team overheard and got wind of their scheme, fate intervened. Rather than have a group of would be academics ruin the reputation of the fine institution of higher learning, the university’s academic leadership decided instead, to send them to an incredibly remote location where they could literally do no harm.

While the research expedition was banished on Vennet their published and peer reviewed findings rocked the scientific and cultural communities and had several unintended consequences with ramifications to the current day. First of all, the team grew fond of the stark, raw beauty of Vennet. At first seen as a punishment, it had many interesting features and some similarities to their homes on Kenset. This opportunity to study two complete, planet bearing red star systems in such close proximity was exciting. One of the Esaran team members happened to be interested in the ancient technological aspects of the Edur, having lost large sums of money betting on contemporary Edur sporting events. The conventional wisdom was a well-established theory to explain the Edur diaspora. A crude fleet of relatively small, wandering sub luminal generational colony ships in the area of the Outland Run. Unfortunately, very few traces of their activities outside J'Lai Edur (world) exist. Evidence of these STL colonizers are fragmentary at best. Although several well documented Edur planetary sites date from the period between 10,000BCE to the collapse around 9,700BCE. Few true colonies seem to have been established but rather long term exploration and scientific study was seen as the purpose. Almost no evidence of commercial scale resource development is found at these dig sites.

While out doing some mind numbingly boring densitometer calibration surveys over kilometers thick pack ice, they came across some lanthanum readings they could not account for. The subsequent excavation, done more to break up their collective tedium, revealed some startling findings. The wreckage of an ancient starship. It became quickly apparent that the immense age and strange design did not match any known craft. Some bizarre, discrete and quite massive columnar monoliths were arrayed around the site as well. Further investigation revealed that these were encased in high temperature ceramics. The interiors were magnetically sensitive and super conductive germanium-niobium and niobium nitride. They functioned as long duration, high fidelity solid state data storage. These data collection nodes had been connected to a now completely absent, very long axis, dispersed passive sensor array, with integral dark energy interferometers. Once the years long efforts of the crypto-linguistics team solved the mysteries necessary for reading the entombed data the discoveries were amazing. This network claimed to have nodes around stars as distant as Fieral (world).

What made translation of the data so difficult was that two completely different languages were being stored in these devices. One was a very condensed and complex form of an ancient precursor to modern Meroqua. The other language was an extinct dialect with only a vague resemblance to structural rudiments of Kuluk dialects. Members of the ancient expedition included technologically advanced Edur with a mixture of morphologies. Some individuals demonstrated right side power arms and some with left sided. These star faring Edur had something resembling modern Meroquan with them. This finding was immediately attacked by the academic communities of several planetary civilizations throughout the Distant Fringe, as there was no evidence that these two species had ever been in contact before the coming of humans.

Fragments of the translated data described how the Edur Matriarchs had completed detailed surveys of the binary system during refueling operations and the moons of the gas giant now known as Prosser were probed and colony markers were dropped.

Detailed metallurgical studies of the lanthanum filaments demonstrated some extremely unusual properties. They had baryon strange particle fatigue. The signature of the particle fatigue functions as a very precise clock. Essentially, the Taranil Singularity had precipitated a misjump. Only lanthanum which had experienced its unique dark energy contamination and the WIMP decay associated with these space time, gravimetric distortions could be marked in this way. These are similar to, but distinct from, the nearby Harmal Strange, for example. These effects are impossible to reproduce under laboratory conditions. Ergo, the ancient Edur had access to a jump capable ship at one point. These explorers far from home, had started studying the phenomena which had stranded them on Vennet. The surviving fragments of their detailed records, when pieced together, suggest that the stranded colony was sterile. There were autopsy reports of low Edur male survival rates and they were having difficulty in gestational outcomes, which in forensic reports were attributed to disrupted embryonic inter cellular signaling.

Once the scandal of these findings, which had initially resulted in the entire team being granted their degrees from their university, reached the public media, chaos ensued. The bold and wildly controversial findings were deemed too improbable, too difficult to accept. As result of the scandal the plans for the development of the Vennet site by Yuan Wi and Pro-Vida had to be put on hold.

At this point the Garden Verdant Society stepped in. Their team of lawyers filed a Colonial Corporate Charter and Economic Development Plan. They took over the commercial contracts for the settlements on Vennet through a small holding company they were using as a front, creatively titled the Vennet Development Society or VDS. They took over the operation of what became a modest D class starport, and trained the fire rescue teams who double as cargo stevedores when needed. They staff the emergency trauma center, maintain the computational services on an antiquated model 5 mainframe, space traffic control, navigational aids etc. Ice mines and the associated fuel processing center is used to produce unrefined fuel. Generous underground storage tanks were built to keep the liquid fuel from refreezing. Equipped with heat exchangers, routed from the starport’s single fusion reactor, so fuel can be pumped into ships. These operations are costly and require lead time to ready and prepare tons of fuel. Berthing and fuel rates are double normal port charges. The base is on a very tight energy budget to survive in this frozen environment.

There are reasons why the Verdant Garden Society decided to intercede and assume control at this point in history. Yuan Wi and their trade ally Pro-Vida from Lon Mardos (world), were trying to launch a new brand of organic whole grain dietary supplements purported at the time, to boost psionic abilities and cruelty free, light weight, woven teleportation meditation mats. They wanted to break into the niche tourism and provide lower cost, mass market food items among the Enlightened citizens and the cloistered orders of The Retreat. Both notoriously difficult markets to tap into, with many protective tariffs.

At the time a corporate development charter for Vennet was practically free for the taking. With no oversight, environmental nor regulatory concerns. Production, manufacturing and packaging could all be done in largely automated factories dropped into areas of raw materials and shipped easily to markets on Gateway for further distribution. At first modest monthly delivery schedules were proposed until high demand could support higher volume production. The ascendancy of Wolf (world), with its emerging political power and influence shifted the trade routes to what became known as the Wolfs Tail. This effectively cut off the alternative route from Yeeshim to Wisp to Vennet to Dev Maros with service to Pessent and Gateway. Pan-Stellar won the trade contracts with an aggressive bid to establish a route with service from Wolf to Pessent. They enhanced their partnership with Uttakar Marine Biosystems, who leaked data debunking the claims of Yuan Wi and Pro-Vida’s new product lines. This shut off competition and allowed their nutra-soy analogues and neo-krill pastes to dominate among the communes of the retreat through carefully licensed local producers who used their patented DNA sequences for production and agreed to pay handsome royalties in exchange for some local control of flavors and colors.

The final betrayal was when certain Dev Maros (world) officials and trade ministers signed off on the new routes. Retirement packages and large bribes were always suspected. Unfortunately, the inter-planetary crypto-currencies and stock options of the time were extremely difficult to track. It was comparatively easy for trade cartels to launder large sums of money, prior to the subsequent wave of banking reforms. Dev Maros was promised elaborate technology development packages, which as of this date are still TBD. Additionally, the promised starport infrastructure projects are, as yet, not fully implemented.

A famous group of Starmercs, called the Helveticans were then contracted to provide system security. A large military contract was awarded and pushed through appropriations committees. A 500ton system defense boat squadron was to be established at a brand new military fortress complex in the Pessent system. The local military-industrial complex was thrilled as the construction, and maintenance contracts provided a much needed boost to the local economies. Local construction was seen as an important step in demonstrating their autonomy and importance. The orbital boatyards struggled with labor disputes, supply issues and maintaining mil-spec quality standards which would be expected for the newly upgraded facilities. Despite the attempted cover-ups, the economic impact of the generous development contracts and system defense boat orders with lucrative technical advisors positions were too good to pass up.

The reason this is relevant for Vennet is because the existing Nomad Port in the system which was supporting Yuan Wi and Pro-Vida’s nascent operations was recalled. The Recovery Trade contract was revoked. There was a trio of ships that the Yimin Jiti had built at Narit (world) yards. The first was the YJSS Akubla Mutai, a Hercules class Commercial Tender, this is a type of Commercial Tender: TL-11, rated at 3,500 dTons. The second was the YJSS Ridge Bourne Cole, an Endeavor class Ship Transporter, which is a class of Civilian Ship Transporter, TL-11, rated at 30,000 dTons. The queen of the squadron was the YJSS Akella D’Jargo, a Frame Carrier: TL-11, rated at 90,000 dTons of the Mariner class Frame Carriers. Only the two primitive and aging Bluestone class Cargo Barges, named Pengo and Pay Doh, were left behind at their moorings. The larger vessels were headed to Pessent (world) to support the port upgrades, the construction of the military base and subsequent construction of the prototype system defense boat. Which came to be known as Her Majesty, the Pessent Princess. To date only the prototype has been completed from the promised squadron of ten. The massive ships of the aging nomad port are used to transport this heavily armored SDB among the worlds of The Retreat, on interior security sweeps, and the lone SDB is still crewed by members of the Helveticans.

World starport[edit]

Vennet has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World technology level[edit]

Vennet possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
    • Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
    • Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
    • Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
    • FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.

World government[edit]

Vennet is governed by a Corporate Polity with a single corporation with a typical corporate structure as a government. A company town, or world. The typical corporate run world usually has a single purpose. Examples include mining, agriculture, or other kinds of resource extraction. But rather than a simple base of operations, there are facilities for housing workers and their families including hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure. How, or if, the children of the workers are incorporated into the workforce varies with companies. The corporation running the world may be a subsidiary of a larger interstellar corporation.
