Order of the Starship and Crown
Order of the Starship and Crown: The Imperium's most prestigious order of knighthood.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
The order has only one knightly rank, that of Knight of the Order of Starship and Crown (K.S.C.) [1], though the associated non-knightly dignity of Companion of the Order of Starship and Crown (C.S.C.) has a wider membership [2]. Knights are ranked according to the date of their knighthood, although the seniority of the Emperor's knighthood is considered to be that of Cleon I. There are only about 200 members holding the rank and title of Knight of the Order of Starship and Crown at any one time [1], but because most Companions of the Order are typically granted a separate Bachelor Knighthood along with their induction as a Companion, the membership in the Order is perceived by some to be larger and more diverse than it actually is [3].
- Badge of the Order: The badge of the order is a stylized starship laid over a circlet representing the Imperial crown, both in gold, on a field of black.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
When it was formed the new order incorporated almost the entire membership of the older Order of the Imperial Sunburst, which was disbanded by the same proclamation. Over the early years of the Imperium it grew to encompass a wide and diverse membership [4], particularly among those of the rank of Companion of the Order [5]. Over the years leading up to the Civil War, the Order grew in numbers (both among the "Knight of the Order" and "Companion of the Order" ranks) when much of its upper echelons among the "Knights of the Order" were stripped away by the Civil War and not replaced by Empress Arbellatra. While the Order retains the honor of its heyday and still has a relatively large membership (mostly among "Companions of the Order"), it no longer approaches the size it once had, and the number of individuals holding the rank of "Knight of the Order of Starship and Crown" remains extremely small and highly exclusive. [6]
The knights of this order are especially loyal to the Emperor and often take on special missions of service to the throne. [7]
- The size of the order varies depending on the whims of the reigning Emperor; as of 1117 there are about 200 members at the "Knight" rank, making it one of the most exclusive of the Imperium's orders of chivalry.
Privileges Conferred[edit]
The order grants the following privileges:
- Imperial Audience Precedence: Members of the order take precedence over all others when applying for an audience. This privilege technically supercedes even that of the archdukes, although all of the archdukes are also members of the order.
- Holiday Seat Benefits: Members are also entitled to a seat at the Emperor's table during the annual Holiday and Emperor's Birthday banquets.
- Gratis Lodging on Capital: The headquarters of the order are on Capital, adjacent to the Moot Spire. The building contains the grand ceremonial hall of the order, a museum, archives, library, and the small, but sumptuous apartments, which are maintained for visiting members.
Esteemed Membership[edit]
Grand Master: The current Grand Master and Sovereign of the Order of the Order of the Starship and Crown is Emperor Strephon.
