The Loeskalth of Sagal (Gushemege 0339) or Abaelou (Gushemege 0233) -- records differ -- are an extinct Minor Human Race.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Loeskalth are known only from ancient First Imperium records. Remnants of their language, Loes, are still in evidence, and their genetic heritage can be traced in many populations, but as an extant culture they are long gone.

Physiology and Ecology[edit]

As a minor human race, they shared the basic physiology of all members of Humaniti.

Archaeological and Cultural Sophontology[edit]

The Loeskalth spoke their own language, Loes, but also adopted (or more likely were forced to adopt) Vilani; depending on the time period, Loeskalth and Loeskalth-descended populations would speak pure Loes, a derived form of Loes with clear influence from Vilani, or something recognisable as simply a Vilani dialect.

History[edit]

Presumably, the Loeskalth were one of the human populations settled by the Ancients, though the details are unknown.

The S'mrii were the first to contact the Loeskalth, around a thousand years before the Vilani, but the unfortunate S'mrii colonists in question were wiped out by the belligerent Loeskalth. Relations between the two races were never better than frosty as a result.

During the early stages of the First Imperium, the Loeskalth culture absorbed a great deal of science and technology indirectly from the Vilani. Using this, they founded a small empire which embraced, at its height, most of their home subsector. [1]

Among their victims were the Tapazmal, whom they raided periodically for artworks and other items of interest.

The Vilani eventually came into conflict with Loeskalth raiders, and raised forces to combat them. This included making mercenaries out of the Gumahl, a nearby minor race.

About -4200, the Vilani consolidation destroyed the Loeskalth Empire and absorbed their civilization into the mainstream of Vilani culture. An aggressive and warlike race, the Loeskalth resisted but were ultimately overwhelmed. [1]

Spacebourne Wandering Period[edit]

Recent evidence has shown that the last pocket of Loeskalth resistance built a large asteroid starship which set off on a sublight voyage across the Great Rift after the final Vilani triumph. The descendants of the refugees on this ship later became the so-called Sky Raiders. [1]

The Sky Raiders were a semi-legendary culture which seems to have flourished some 5,300 years ago in the Far Frontiers Sector. Almost all evidence of the Sky Raiders has come from oral traditions, myths, legends and the like from a number of separate worlds in the Jungleblut and Taemerlyk subsectors. Tradition invariably depicted the Sky Raiders as a ruthless, aggressive race, descending from the sky to spread destruction and death among a planet's inhabitants. Plunder and pillage would seem to have been their main object in these raids. [2]

The Sky Raiders' origins and ultimate fate, as well as details of their culture, remained unknown for centuries. Evidence gathered, especially on Mirayn (Far Frontiers 2134), had proven that the Sky Raiders were of human stock (race uncertain) enjoying TL–9 to TL–10 and employing the Vilani language. In time, it was concluded that they were Loeskalth. [2]

Raider's Blight in Far Frontiers.

After the fall of the Sky Raiders' culture, surviving populations interbred with local Vlazhdumecta on a number of worlds in Far Frontiers. In time, some of these blended cultures reclaimed the jump drive and began another period of raiding. The Zhodani put an end to this, and the "ghost" of the Sky Raider region can still be seen as a characteristic "dent" in the Consulate's rimward border (see map, right).

It had always been assumed that the Loeskalth had been restrained within Gushemege, however in 877 archaeologists on Oewni (Dagudashaag 0216) in neighbouring Dagudashaag Sector discovered a carved wooden statue and a series of intricately carved stone pillars that appeared to be Loeskalth in origin. The statue is currently believed to be a representation of the Loeskalth Goddess, Xtahl the healer. Most scientists hold to the theory that the carving and stone patterns had been brought to the planet by 'Conquering' Vilani. However there are a growing number of people who believe that Loeskalth fleeing the Vilani had established the first Oewni colony.[3]

Archaeological research and study of Sky Raiders' artifacts in Far Frontiers Sector is conducted by academic groups such as the Institute for System Studies on Alzenei.
