Joyeuse is a high-population, pre-rich world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.
- It lacks adequate resources to expand its economy to a rich status.
- Its economy and population are rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to quickly rise barring outside forces.
- This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or above the standard for Charted Space.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the New Islands Subsector of Reft Sector.
- This world has a Naval Base, usually associated with military starships.
- This world has a Military Base, usually associated with military ground forces.
- This world has a colony at Quichotte (Reft 1729)
Astrography and Planetology[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Mainworld Data[edit]
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Joyeuse is a Meso World between 10,400km and 12,000km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.7G and 0.9G. The horizon will appear about 4.7km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Joyeuse has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. A Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Joyeuse has 85-95% of its surface covered by liquid water with a few small continents, and a number of islands and archipelagos. Dry land is limited. Wilderness refueling is possible.
History and Background[edit]
Straddling the divider between the New and Old Islands, Joyeuse is a well-developed world with a government similar to that of Esperanza (Reft 0926). [2]
Joyeuse was settled from Amondiage (Reft 2325) during the sub-light expansion of the Islands clusters. In turn, Joyeuse settled St. Hilaire (Reft 0930) and Besancon (Reft 1526). [3]
There was even one case of voluntary union, when Quichotte became a province of Joyeuse. [4]
Joyeuse stands apart from the politics of the Islands, and generally remains neutral in local disputes. Its people do have a traditional affinity with Amondiage, from where the world was colonised, as well as a general dislike of New Colchis, although this never prevents them from taking advantage of trade opportunities. Indeed, a significant fraction of the naval support vessels and tankers used by the Joyeuse navy originate in the shipyards of New Colchis.
The exception to their political disinterest in recent years is a firm support for the Convention of Interdiction, which declares Orphee a closed world. Joyeuse provides most of the vessels that monitor the approaches to Orphee.
World Starport[edit]
Joyeuse has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
World Population (P)[edit]
Joyeuse has a population of 3,000,000,000 sophonts (billions).
- High Population Worlds like this tend to have huge consumer markets.
World Languages[edit]
Urbanization[edit]
The population of Joyeuse is extremely centralised, with one enormous city and several other very large metropolises. These cities are generally located on the coasts of Joyeuse’ small land masses, and in most cases have spilled over onto the continental shelf. Thus a significant proportion of most cities is underwater.
World Government (G)[edit]
Joyeuse is governed by a Non-charismatic Dictatorship. This is a continuation of the charismatic dictatorship, where the original leadership has died or retired and been replaced by allies or protégés. The justifications for the original change in government remain as well as the assertion of rights to rule.
World Military[edit]
Joyeuse is one of the few states in the Islands to routinely build Jump-3 capable vessels, for both trade and military purposes. Its primary field of technological distinction is military; Joyeuse repeatedly claims to build the best warships and weapons in the Islands.
- The main military force has a distinctly maritime flavour; combat submersibles guard the sea lanes while troop-carrying versions provide strategic mobility.
- In addition to sublight gunships and system defence boats, Joyeuse operates three 'tiers' of naval assets. somewhat confusingly named Tier 1, Tier 3, and Tier 6. Tier 1 consists of jump-1 capable vessels, typically heavily armoured defensive units; Tier 3 vessels form the backbone of the navy, being capable of a single jump-3, while the handful of Tier 6 vessels have enough fuel aboard for two consecutive jump-3s.
World Economy[edit]
Joyeuse has a well-developed high-technology manufacturing base, though geared more to local needs than trade output. It tends to produce reliable items of moderately high performance rather than top-end cutting-edge products. Consumer goods that have the approval of the dictator and his immediate advisors -- with the ‘Approved’ logo -- can sell for 20-30% above that of identical products.
