Besancon is an icy, low-population vacuum world, with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts, warranting hazardous environment precautions.
- Its surface is ice-capped with little or no atmosphere and nearly all of its water frozen.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the New Islands Subsector of Reft Sector.
- This world-system has a Military Base, usually associated with military ground forces, which may be located on or off-world.
Astrography and Planetology[edit]
Besancon is part of a four-world chain of systems that can be reached by Jump-1. This chain, known as the New Islands Central Region in local charts (the term 'main' is an Imperial concept and not generally used in the Islands), connects via Jump-2 to most of the worlds of the Old Islands Subsector.
Stellar Data[edit]
Mainworld Data[edit]
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Besancon is a Small World between 2,400km and 4,000km in diameter. The world has low gravity between 0.1G and 0.17G. The horizon will appear about 2.5km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Besancon has a pressure of less than 0.001 atmospheres which requires the use of a Vacc Suit. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Besancon has 05-15% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice. Wilderness refueling will be difficult. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are Hell Worlds or Poor Worlds depending on their atmosphere.
History and Background[edit]
Besancon was colonized from Joyeuse (Reft 1628), then in turn served as the source of colonists for Elysee (Reft 1525) and Gloire (Reft 1123).[2]
After the introduction of the Jump Drive to the Island clusters, Besancon was claimed as a colony of Joyeuse, and then reclaimed its independence in 1023 as a result of the Concordat of Topas.[3]
Besancon has become a stopover on the trade route known as the Crescent. Small trade missions are maintained by various powers, with New Home, Joyeuse and New Colchis conducting most of their trade with one another in the local port. Other than as a refuelling stop, Besancon has little strategic importance. However, the fact that trade ships come through quite frequently has made it a place of interest for the navies of the Islands.
World Starport[edit]
Besancon has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World Population[edit]
Besancon's population has always remained very small, only exceeding 10,000 during brief periods when colony missions were being marshalled. The entire world population dwells in a single town, mainly working at the starport or in supporting industries.
World Languages[edit]
World Government[edit]
A liberal representative democracy has always been found satisfactory. In practice the government does little but oversee public services, and intrudes very little into the daily lives of citizens.
Economy[edit]
Deep asteroid mining operations extracting Lanthanum for Jump drives are run not by the local government but by the Islandbridge Trading Corporation.
New Era[edit]
During the Regency era, Besancon is claimed by both New Colchis (Reft 1327) and Joyeuse (Reft 1628), with ground troops to enforce their claims. [4]
