Orphee is a rich, agricultural, nonindustrial garden world with a near-ideal, utopian environment conducive to most sophonts and high-grade living conditions due to a bustling economy.
- As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- This is a rich world with a prosperous and thriving world economy.
- Its economy and population are rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to quickly rise barring outside forces.
- This is a "forbidden" world designated as a Red Zone with an environment, laws, customs, life forms, or other conditions that make it extremely dangerous to visitors. Everyone is forbidden to travel here.
- This world has a research station engaged in the scientific pursuit of knowledge.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the New Islands Subsector of Reft Sector.
- It is the homeworld of the Orpheides, a sophontic species and minor race.
Astrography and Planetology[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Mainworld Data[edit]
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Orphee is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Orphee has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. A Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Orphee has 45-55% of its surface covered by liquid water. Wilderness refueling is possible.
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
Native Sophont: Orpheides[edit]
A potentially intelligent race, the Orpheides of Orphee are an herbivorous grazer species confined to their world of origin. These grazers have achieved only rudimentary development, approximating tech level 0, although their culture at this level has proven of interest to academics throughout the Islands Cluster. It is expected that the Orpheides, with suitable protection from interference, can achieve a technological civilization within a few thousand years. [2]
Etymology[edit]
"Orpheus" - a poet and lyre-player of Greek legend who tried to free his wife Eurydice from the underworld by charming the god Hades with his music (Webster's Encyclopedia 1095 - Regina Edition).
History and Background[edit]
The world does have a small Human academic community who study the Orpheides society. However, it has been interdicted to trade and naval traffic by the Convention of Interdiction (5575 AD, 1054 Imperial). This was signed by all worlds within the Islands Clusters (New Islands Subsector and Old Islands Subsector). Occasional ships carrying supplies and researchers do call on the system from time to time. The interdiction of Orphee is equivalent to a Red Travel Zone within the Imperium. [2]
World Starport (Sp)[edit]
Orphee does not have a starport. The Class X Starport is an indication that no starport exists in the system. There are no facilities or services available, and no site marked for landing.
- Joyeuse has constructed a small naval station in orbit around Orphee, acting as a monitoring platform and base for small sublight craft enforcing the blockade.
World Population (P)[edit]
Orphee has a population of 1,000,000 sophonts (millions).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
- With the exception of a small community of Human scholars, this population is entirely Orpheides.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Orphee possesses a Technology Level of TL–0.
- These worlds often contain a Proto-Sophont species beginning to establish a nascent civilization and society.
- This world is in its Alpha Period and has not yet been interfered with by a higher technology civilization.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Bodily communicative apparati, courier-runners, and smoke signals.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Bodily muscle.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Bodily locomotion, riding beasts, and litters or sedan chairs.
- Water: Swimming, rafts, and canoes.
- Air: Typically not available unless a bodily ability.
World Government (G)[edit]
Orphee is governed by a Corporate Polity, having a single corporation with a typical corporate structure as a government. Essentially, this is a "company town" (or world). The typical corporate-run world usually has a single purpose. Examples include mining, agriculture, or other kinds of resource extraction. But rather than a simple base of operations, there are facilities for housing workers and their families, including hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure. How, or if, the children of the workers are incorporated into the workforce varies with companies. The corporation running the world may be a subsidiary of a larger interstellar corporation.
World Law (L)[edit]
Orphee has no law in practice. It is an Anarchy. On many worlds, this by itself justifies an Amber Zone advisory. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate.
