The Huosua of Iraisafeie (Ealiyasiyw 1527) are a Non-Human Minor Race. They are technologically primitive sophonts.

  • Some records incorrectly notate this sophont species as the Huosha.

Physiology & Environment[edit]

The Huosua, like all other species native to Iraisafeie, thrive in their homeworld's cold chlorine-rich atmosphere. Their evolutionary history is unknown – their remains don't preserve well and their homeworld's corrosive nature almost entirely precludes the formation of fossil remains, not that anyone has looked. Huosua are considered carnivore walkers and are typically found in plains terrain.

Huosua Sophont Species.jpg

Huosua are bilaterally symmetrical, with a head containing the brain and mounting the primary sensory organs, a torso that contains the major internal organs, paired forelimbs and rear legs used for locomotion, and a long flexible tail. A tentacle mass consisting of twelve distinct arms forms the face: these act as manipulators and are capable of incredible delicacy or of exerting considerable power. Huosua are heavy, typically massing in excess of 200 kg and standing around 1.8 meters tall. They have a cartilagenous articulated internal structure that supports their musculature and organs, their internal fluids consist of a thick dark chemical ichor, and they have tough leathery hides.[1]

Their senses include vision (sensitivity to light), hearing (sensitivity to vibration), smell and taste (sensitivity to volatiles), and touch (sensitivity to pressure), as well as other base cognitive abilities such as awareness of temperature. Their psionic capability remains unknown.

It is unclear exactly which atmospheric gases are essential to the Huosua metabolism and the role they play within their bodies: Huosua do not utilize chlorine during respiration, despite the high percentage present within their homeworld's atmosphere. The element, however, is an important component within their biochemical makeup.

Huosua from different regions of Iraisafeie exhibit different coloration, facial tentacle sizes and arrangements, and skin markings. Nothing is known of their genders or reproductive processes.

Huosua will rapidly die in environmental conditions suitable for Aslan or humans. This does not stop them from pursuing prey into Aslan habitats, generally with fatal consequences for all parties involved.

Diet & Trophics[edit]

Huosua are known to be persistence hunters, following large herds of migratory grazers and picking off targets of opportunity. Their active metabolisms and unpleasant natural weaponry make them fast, deadly killers.

They grab small prey with their facial tentacles and pass it to a sharp-edged shearing beak located on the lower part of the head. Larger targets are attacked by impact: typically, a Huosua runs into (or leaps onto) a foe using its mass and weight to unbalance the opponent, grapples it with tentacles, and rolls it around while rapidly kicking and ripping at it with its clawed rear legs. Other Huosua will join in attacking a downed foe. Despite their size Huosua are capable of short bursts of high speed, while their flexible tail lends them excellent balance and agility.

Psychology[edit]

Huosua psychology appears to be driven by factors common to many sophonts:

  • Acquisition (stemming from the need to gather adequate nutrition),
  • Curiosity (originating from the urge to seek out sources of nutrition),
  • Perpetuation (the urge to continue the species), and
  • Preservation (derived from the need to continue their personal existence).

The Huosua are deeply xenophobic, going out of their way to avoid contact with strangers, whether they are members of other tribal groups or beings from offworld. If placed in a situation where they cannot avoid contact, they are much more likely to attack than attempt any form of social interaction.

Huosua enter a state of frenzied bloodlust at the climax of a hunt, attacking any living thing – except other Huosua – unlucky enough to be nearby. The hunters gorge themselves on their kill while in this mental state. The biochemical makeup of Aslan and humans is toxic to Huosua, and Huosua that consume offworlder victims while in a frenzy will suffer severe digestive issues or even death. A non-frenzied Huosua would not consume unfamiliar, unpleasant-smelling offworlder meat.

Huosua seem bloodthirsty, relentless, merciless, and barbaric, and (from an Aslan perspective) they utterly lack any form of honor. When they have been observed in social situations they appear to endlessly bicker and squabble amongst themselves. No studies regarding their fundamental psychology, society, culture, or traditions have been conducted.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The Huosua mostly live in nomadic tribal groups that follow herds of prey animals, though solitary individuals have also been observed. The various tribes are believed to form larger Confederations that the Aslan refer to as Nations.

The system's noisy stars and the atmosphere of Iraisafeie seriously hamper sensor scans, making an accurate count of their numbers impossible; Huosua aren't listed in the world's population figures. Some authorities claim they could number in the tens of millions, though this is purely speculation.

Although currently at a Stone Age level of development, the Huosua have consistently proven to be a threat to Aslan mining engineers working on the world. Huosua make simple tools and equipment and may construct shelters when staying at a location for an extended period, but carry very little with them when following herds: items they have made are generally either destroyed or abandoned when the tribe moves on.

Culture[edit]

Some Huosua may adorn themselves with colored minerals or mud or wear items of jewellery such as sparkly stones or teeth. Huosua have been observed draped in the hides of their kills, though whether this is clothing, camouflage, or ritual remains uncertain.

  • In a few locations across the world the Huosua have raised monumental standing stones. Their purpose or significance is not understood.

Linguistic Topography[edit]

A large number of native languages are spoken. None have been translated and the nature of these languages remains unknown.
