Gaae has both a thin tainted atmosphere and no surface water which makes habitation by sophonts difficult. The system has a population between 10,000 and a million, lacking the industrial base to be completely self-supporting. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Shallows Subsector of Dagudashaag Sector and in the Domain of Vland. Gaae, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight, a member of the Imperial Landed Nobility who acts as an Imperial representative to the world. This world contains an Imperial Scout Base, capable of handling Scout Service starships and personnel. This is the homeworld of the Ka Keleree, a Minor Race. During the Long Night this world was named Karsa.
Astrography and Planetology[edit]
Gaae is a member of the Dagudashaag Main.
Stellar Data[edit]
Mainworld Data[edit]
This cool, dry, desert world is the home of the Ka Keleree, native sophonts that live in vast caverns in the polar regions.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Gaae is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Gaae has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. While the thin atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Gaae has no free-standing water or ice on the surface. Wilderness refueling isn't possible on this world. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are classified Desert World or a Hell World depending on their atmosphere.
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Complex life exists here, descended from species that adapted to the long-ago drying of the planet's former oceans.
Many lifeforms create their habitats by exuding large quantities of powerful acids (complex mixtures of sulfuric, chromic, and hydrofluoric acids with numerous catalytic components) which can rapidly etch away the rock through which they tunnel.
Native Sophont: Ka Keleree[edit]
The Ka Kelaree are evolved from a scavenger, living in the large underground caverns near the subterranean lakes and other remaining sources of water. The Ka Keleree have developed a stable, peaceful TL–7 society.
History and Background[edit]
The native Ka Keleree evolved out of scavenger stock that still have many living representatives on the world. The race appear to be a curious hybrid of animal and fungus. They are predominantly carbon-based but have silicon as a significant component of their physiology, most notably their tough outer shell.
Although generally insular, the Ka Kelree have agreed to sell the equatorial regions of the planet to Human and S'mrii interests. There is little inter-species interaction, as Ka Keleree refuse to travel off-world and the majority of communication is carried out by radio. Ka Keleree will occasionally be persuaded to sell stone carvings etched by their natural acid, which can bring a substantial price throughout the Imperium.
World Starport (Sp)[edit]
Gaae has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World Population (P)[edit]
Gaae has a population of 100,000 sophonts (hundreds of thousands).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
- The population is almost entirely Ka Keleree. A few Humans are based at the starport.
Urbanization[edit]
The Port and "city" of Lobsterpot in the equatorial region is the only obvious settlement on the planet. The city has two major functions -- the export of glass products made from the fine, naturally-occurring coloured sands of the region and the study of the native lifeforms.
Ka Keleree city-tunnels are usually found excavated around large underground lakes.
World Technology Level (TL)[edit]
Gaae possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
- Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
- Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
- Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
World Government (G)[edit]
Gaae is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions in the government. These positions are inherited by member of the group or their family members. The organization may be a monarchy, with titles passed to family members, or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Alternatively, the organization may be a more typical government apparatus, only with positions of power inherited.
- Technically the Ka Keleree are somewhere between a type 3 and a type 2 in terms of governance. Local quasi-government is the Council of Light, in which the more charismatic Ka Keleree citizens represent both their own interests and those of anyone who thinks similar. All decisions are decided by debate, and the entire adult population of the settlement then vote on the matter, empowering "channellers" who will lead until a project is completed.
- At any one time there can be as many as 30 elected channellers arguing for resources for their particular project.
