Deru Nooq is a rich world with a moderate population of over a hundred million, but not yet a billion sophonts in size.
- This world has high-grade living conditions with a good climate and a non-harmful environment. As such, this world is much sought after with large queues for immigration here.
- This world has a prosperous and thriving world economy.
- Most observers think that the planet's economy and population will prosper further in the near future barring outside forces.
- It is a member of the Hive Federation in the Virginis Subsector of Spica Sector.
- The world serves as the subsector capital with the significant extra trade and prestige associated with that role.
- This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or above the standard for Charted Space.
- This world has control over colonies at Nandan (Spica 2218), Baren (Spica 2318), and Tsent (Spica 2118).
Description / Astrography & Planetology[edit]

Native Lifeforms[edit]
Certain carnivorous lifeforms -- and the habitats supporting them -- are protected due to their important role in predation of Hiver larvae. Hiver intelligence is the product of environmental stresses in infancy; avoiding these perils triggers the larva's capacity for consciousness.
History & Background / Dossier[edit]
"Nooq" is Gurvin for "sphere" -- see Nooq Sector, named for the construct housing the Inheritor race. This world's name is thus something akin to "Deru Sphere" or Deru Globe". Deru is the charismatic dictator currently in charge here (government code A). The planet has become wealthy due to Deru's trade policies.
Not only does Deru Nooq have an A-class starport, so do its colonies at Baren and Tsent. The almost frantic expansion of the planet's trade fleet is responsible for the wealth of these systems.
Deru is in competition with the influential Star Patterns Trading, which controls its own A-class starports at nearby Star Harvest (Spica 2518) and Star Hub (Spica 1722).
World Starport[edit]
Deru Nooq has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
- A small, unobtrusive security force is drawn from the most suitable members of the local militia and stiffened with navy regulars.
- The density of ancillary buildings around the downport means that it is not a good place to build Hiver nests; settlement near a Hive Federation port favours a world's non-Hivers. These communities are difficult to build into predictable social models.
- Ships are subject to mandatory anti-larval fumigation before leaving, to kill any infant Hivers that might have gotten aboard. Hivers are distressed by the notion that a larva might find itself achieving sapience in an environment absent adult Hivers and suitable nests.
World Languages[edit]
- Hiver Sign Language
- Gurvin
- Non-Hiver locals will typically speak Gurvin augmented with a pidgin of local languages and Ithkluri, to provide ambiguity and metaphor lacking from the standard Gurvin vocabulary.
Urbanization[edit]
Hivers are fond of rounded shapes, domes, spheres and non-Euclidian architecture. This is ironic in that many schools of Hiver starship construction are focused around the opposite -- extremely square, boxy ships.
- Hivers like small, cramped domiciles with defined spaces and solid walls. Much of a Hiver nest is subterranean.
- Pet Snohl may be found in the deeper nests.
World Technology Level[edit]
Deru Nooq possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-3.
World Government[edit]
Deru Nooq is governed by a Charismatic Dictatorship. Charismatic governments justify their ability to rule by simply asserting their right to rule. Charismatic dictatorships are typically young governments, coming as a recent change, and rely on the leader(s) to supply head of government.
World Military[edit]
As a member of the Hive Federation, this world can call upon Ithklur warriors as well as its own defence forces.
