Common Iltharan
The primary language used by the Iltharan culture, once a regionally powerful one, now downtrodden and marginalised.
Description (Background)[edit]
The Iltharans were one of several Human cultures to build civilizations on the planet Drexilthar (Reaver's Deep 1826), which was terraformed by the Ancients. Their neighbours, the Tring and Akhakad nations, were absorbed into the Iltharan culture, though remnants of their own identity remained. When the Iltharans -- or "High Iltharans" -- acquired jump drive during the Long Night, they carved out a pirate empire; as such, their primary language became known to many worlds in the sector. Although several Iltharan languages remained in use, this dominant language, known as Common, was associated with the business of empire.
"Once you become acquainted with Iltharan culture, it will come as no surprise to learn that the word 'Iltharan' has come to mean 'pirate' in many local dialects. It is also no surprise that the Iltharans view this with a certain degree of pride."
-- Professor Daffyd Zhugasvilli, Comparative Sophontology Lecture, University of Sylea
Common Iltharan is still spoken by most people on the homeworld of Drexilthar itself. Since the end of their Empire, most Iltharans have learned to speak Galanglic and other foreign tongues, but they jealously preserve their ancestral languages.
