History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Ascalon is an important high-population world, with the highest population in the subsector.
Despite its being a marginal world, the Vilani settled Ascalon during the First Imperium because of its rich reserves of certain industrial metals. Ascalon became a major trading center and naval base during the Rule of Man, and many Terrans came to settle among the Vilani. During the Long Night the Kingdom of Ascalon arose, a prosperous and stable nation founded on the principle of religious tolerance.
During the reign of Empress Margaret II, the kingdom declared itself independent of the Solomani Sphere and called for Imperial protection.
Nearby Biggles was made a protectorate of Ascalon after the Solomani Rim War. Supposedly, this situation was to last only until the planetary populace of Biggles could construct a working government of its own. Ascalon deliberately intervened on several occasions to ensure that this didn't happen. One reason for their intransigence was the other world's strategic value. Biggles is situated on several major trade routes, and gives Ascalon a great deal of leverage in the ongoing economic conflict with worlds of the Azaremiid Cluster.
World Starport (Sp)[edit]
Ascalon has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
