Gungnir is an agricultural world with a tainted atmosphere but still a near-ideal environment for producing foodstuffs. The system supports a population of tens of millions of sophonts. It is a member of Sword Worlds Confederation in the Sword Worlds Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector and in the Sword Worlds. This world hosts a Sword Worlds Military Base for support of military ground forces.

Astrography & Planetology

Gungnir is a member of the Spinward Main.

Gungnir is a small planet, and its surface is divided into correspondingly few continental plates. The largest one circles the equator of the planet like a girdle, and became “locked up” early on as small Gungnir cooled. This has prevented the oceanic plates at each pole from mixing.

Gungnir has two stars in the star system.

Mainworld Topography and Geography

Gungnir has a number of extremely tall mountains, of which the highest peak is 24,891 metres tall. This places the highest peaks well above the breathable air in an already thin atmosphere. No expedition has ever managed to climb to the top of any of Gungnir's 'High Sixteen' peaks. Expeditions try from time-to-time and reaching certain landmarks on one of High Sixteen can be considered an impressive achievement.

Native Lifeforms

For much of its existence Gungnir was ice-bound, with only primitive life. This developed separately around the two oceans, resulting in Gungnir having essentially two entirely different, incompatible biospheres. As its primary began to expand into a subgiant, Gungnir became warmer and life spread out. Once they met, conflict began. Species evolved in ways that made them toxic to the other biosphere, until balance was achieved.

Gungnir is considered "a biological minefield". Away from carefully tended inhabited regions it is the norm to use filter masks and travel in sealed vehicles.

History & Background (Dossier)

Gungnir has been described as "the Sword Worlds in microcosm." Gungnir is a fractious agricultural world populated by fiercely proud and independent cattle ranchers and grain farmers. The many feudal nobles of Gungnir skirmish among themselves and occasionally produce a would-be king.[2]

Culture

For traders, the most sought-after and expensive Sword Worlder beers are Gungnir’s Lambic Reds, so named for their colour and unusual method of brewing. No yeast is involved -- natural airborne flora perform the fermentation. The variety of Gungnir’s beers is as diverse and unusual as the planet’s political situation, and some beers are only available in batches numbering in the hundreds of bottles.

Language

Trivia

Gungnir is the spear of the god Odin from Norse mythology. The name comes from Old Norse meaning "swaying one".
