The Osp of Lomodo IV are a minor race native to Alpha Subsector of Theta Borealis Sector.
- They have a non-humanoid appearance.
- Their technological competency is rated as primitive.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
An average Osp is about two meters in diameter and stands around a meter tall. They are structurally gelatinous, with cartilaginous, lumpy, brown-colored exoskeleton on their upper portions, and are generally categorized as amoeboid: although they have no permanent limbs, they can temporarily form their elastic body mass into whatever limbs are necessary. They move by extending and contracting their body and can scale sheer surfaces by squeezing "fingers" into tiny cracks. The Osp's mouth is located on the central underside of the body, directly below its brain, and is equipped with a radular tongue and small pointed teeth. They will consume any organic matter they chance across. They have an extremely unpleasant body odor.
The Osp senses of touch and hearing are very developed, but they cannot see or smell. They are sensitive to electromagnetic fields, and can "visualize" their distant surroundings - in surprising detail - through tiny variances in ambient electromagnetic fields.
Psychology[edit]
The Osp exhibit recognized characteristics of intelligence:
- Conceptual thought, including abstract language.
- Social structure, including social organization.
- Tool use, allowing environmental manipulation.
Osp psychology is driven by factors common to many sophonts:
- Acquisition (stemming from the need to gather adequate nutrition),
- Preservation (derived from the need to continue their personal existence), and
- Perpetuation (the urge to continue the species).
Native Culture[edit]
- Homogeneity: 1 (monolithic)
- Acceptance: 3 (xenophobic)
- Strangeness: 1 (very typical)
- Symbols: 3 (very concrete)
Osp colonies (numbering 500-1500 individuals) are primarily nomadic, although they establish temporary dwellings during the fourteenth lunar month, which is their spawning season. The rest of their time is spent travelling from one waterside encampment to the next. Many Osp colonies keep a herd of large herbivorous abetu, used as reserve provisions in case of a food shortage.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Lomodo IVA is the homeworld of a number of sophont species:
- The Osp, with a population of approximately 8 million.
- The Byl, an extinct species.
- The Irf, an extinct species.
The Byl and the Irf exterminated each other during the 1050s.
