The concept of self possessed by all known biologically based sophonts. Also known as Embedded Identity. Unlike a Meta Identity which comprehends itself as existing above, and independent of whatever bodies it may occupy, biological Point Identity of a self which can not be meaningfully discussed without the living body which gives it all of its means of data collection and self-expression. Although most sophonts have a concept of the "spirit" or "soul" which is an example of eta identity, in all cases this soul simply disappears following the destruction of its body. This is in marked contrast to the Virus (or Infomorph) which can move from one electronic processing system, or "body" to another while retaining the same continuous identity.
The process of moving an identity or Personality from one body to another is Metempsychosis. The term is usually used in the field of Information Technology and higher Sophontology.
