A series of great endeavours undertaken by the Zhodani. The Zhodani Consulate has launched a great adventure, born out of pure scientific curiosity: a Core Expedition or voyage to the center of the galaxy, simply to discover what is there.

  • In practice, a new stage of the journey is undertaken at irregular intervals.
  • Parts of the expedition still remain secret to this day, and the expedition itself is, has been, and will continue to be a long-duration scientific mission, lasting decades, centuries, or perhaps even millennia.
  • Of course, so far as the Third Imperium knows, all of this may be a rumor, agitprop, or simply a fanciful propaganda report.

Minor Expeditions (Individual Starship Sorties)[edit]

Small expeditions, too many to count, have ventured far beyond what the major Core Expeditions have covered.

  • They have travelled laterally, to explore areas that are beyond the scope of the Core Expeditions proper.
  • They have also ventured farther coreward, some as far as another 1,000 parsecs.
  • Their reconnaissance helps clear the way for each additional major expedition.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Since approximately -4,000, the Zhodani Consulate has mounted eight core expeditions -- an ongoing process to reach and investigate the galactic core. The seventh expedition was launched in 750 and took fifty years for the round trip, including approximately ten years of exploration and research at its closest approach to the core, 5,000 parsecs from Zhdant.

  • The expeditions, which remain relatively unknown outside of the Zhodani Consulate, have been a source of:
    • Basic research information
    • Xenological data (as new races and cultures were discovered along the route) and...
    • Rare or previously unknown minerals and pharmaceuticals.
  • Settlements, to maintain the established route toward the core, have been established all along the path of the Expeditions. Such worlds conduct the following activities:
    • Exploit valuable mineral deposits
    • Research the strange or novel life forms that are encountered and...
    • Provide maintenance and repairs for ships passing in each direction.

Foreign Response[edit]

The Tezcat have heard vague stories about the Core Expeditions. As the galactic core features a black hole of great mass, and black holes are believed by Tezcat to be abodes of the divine, information on the Zhodani route to the galactic core is one of the few things which could convince the xenophobic Tezcat theocracy to cooperate with other species.
