Barlow's End is a nonindustrial world, that requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.

  • In a technological universe, societies without industrial capability generally suffer as nearly all manufactured and high tech goods must be brought in at significant cost.
  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • It is a member of the Dynchia Comitia in the Balneario Subsector of Leonidae Sector.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

This is one of several worlds in Dynchia space to have Solomani-derived names on standard charts; the Dynchia acquired the jump drive from Solomani settlers, and Solomani are an integrated minority demographic of the Dynchia Comitia.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Barlow's End has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Population (P)[edit]

Barlow's End has a population of 1,000,000 sophonts (millions).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.

Linguistic Topography[edit]

Urbanization[edit]

Dynchia cities and other settlements tend to be carefully planned and extremely well regulated, with near-total use of recycling. This not only minimises ecological damage but also creates a very efficient economy. Growth is slow but sustainable.

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Barlow's End possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government (G)[edit]

Barlow's End is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions within the government. These positions are inherited by members of the group or by their relatives. The organization may be a monarchy, with titles passed to family members, or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Alternatively, the organization may be a more typical government apparatus, only with positions of power inherited.

The Dynchia prefer oligarchical government. The highest-ranking members of each tribe or clan form a council to rule and guide the local population. At the highest level, the most senior member of the most senior clan in each nation -- known as its prince -- has a place on the council that rules the Comitia as a whole.

World Military[edit]

All adult Dynchia are potential combatants with at least some training as warriors, creating an enormous pool of available personnel from whom the few formally organised military units are recruited.

World Law (L)[edit]

Barlow's End has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Personal concealable firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

World Timeline[edit]

  • 300,000 years ago: The Ancients bring the ancestors of the Dynchia to Melantris.
  • -1926: Melantris launches its first space probes.
  • -1820: The Dynchia have achieved a TL-8 spacefaring culture. Soon after, Solomani arrive and make contact, bringing with them the jump drive.
    • During the collapse of the Rule of Man, a number of Solomani migrate into the Melantris region. Some Solomani settlements are incorporated into the Dynchia society.
  • Circa -1500: The Dynchia contact the Ithklur Aexzz.
    • After several centuries of skirmishing and cross-border vendettas, the Hive Federation intervenes.
  • Circa -1200: The princes of the 12 most prominent tribes meet in Council to establish the Dynchia Comitia.
  • -1056: The Hivers mediate a comprehensive peace between the Comitia and the Ithklur Aexzz, which sets the border of Dynchia expansion to trailing.
  • Circa 800: The first traders from the Third Imperium arrive in Dynchia space by way of the Harodar Hegemony to coreward.
