A Poor World is a planet or world type.
- It is a trade code.
- Its two letter trade code abbreviation is Po.
Description / Specifications[edit]
Poor worlds exhibit marginal environmental conditions, at least from the perspective of humans and many other sophonts.
Their atmospheres, while considered breathable (though often requiring artificial assistance) are at best thin, and they have little surface water.
Planetary Characteristics[edit]
- 3 or less (below 35%).
Poor worlds may also be Desert Worlds and / or Hell Worlds.
Probable Planetary Orbit & Climate[edit]
Poor worlds occur where it is possible to retain a suitable kind of atmosphere.
- Inner system worlds, orbiting close to their star, may be too hot to retain any of the required atmosphere types.
- Likewise, outer system worlds, orbiting far from their star, may be too cold to retain the required types of atmosphere.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Poor World is an old but enduring trade code, having existed since the first edition of Traveller.
A Poor World is not necessarily lacking in resources, or even sources of potential wealth. Rather, it has marginal (poor) environmental conditions that make it a less than desirable location.
Poor World status, unlike many other trade codes, does not depend on the world's population. There are unpopulated Poor Worlds, low population Poor Worlds, moderate population Poor Worlds, and high population Poor Worlds.
It is worth noting that any species that has evolved on a Poor World would consider it environmentally ideal, and would likely find worlds with conditions more suitable for humans to have intolerably thick atmospheres and unbearably wet environments.
Poor Worlds may be found all across Charted Space
