History & Background (Dossier)
Caithness is largely a "company planet" run by the Caithness Combine, a joint venture of several major Caledonian trading companies. The planet is governed by a bureaucracy administered under Caledonian law. While the planet itself has no elections for government, the population does vote for members to the Caledonian parliament.
- The system was largely a vassal of various Reaver clans, mostly operating as proxies of the Khan World League, until liberated by the Caleonian Navy after the Reaver War in 373.
- Today, Caithness is home to a scout and major navy base, it's a vital hub for trade to spinward. Given the proximity of the Reaver-dominated Khan World League, it's also an assembly point for convoys shipping out to spinward.
World Starport
Caithness has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
World Languages
- Anglic: The official language of the Principality of Caledon; specifically a group of dialects known simply as Caledonian Anglic.
- Speakers with higher education and backgrounds from the upper middle class and higher speak a dialect very close to classical Anglic with a thin accent; heavier accents and different vocabulary occur the further afield from the nobility, and from Caledon itself, the speaker hails.
- Gheldaght: A descendant of the antiquarian Caledonian ethnic language, found among ardent cultural nationalists and the highly-educated.
World Technology Level
Caithness possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-2.
World Government
Caithness is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy, and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. This ruling bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucractic apparatus or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence, like the military.
