Garth is an agricultural, nonindustrial world still lacking adequate means to expand its economy.
- As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below standard for Charted Space.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Veesene Subsector of Halcyon Sector.
- Garth is a Voluntarily Regressive World
Astrography and Planetology[edit]
This star system is detailed using the Fringian Variant System Description.
System Data[edit]
Ennis-Garth System[edit]
The primary is Ennis, an orange subgiant star. It has a luminosity of 4.578 Sols, a mass of 2.42 Sols, and a diameter of 4.87 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum worldlet, (II) a thin atmosphere radworld, (III) a very thin atmosphere inner world, and (IV) an exotic atmosphere inferno world. (V) Garth orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (VI) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (VII) a small gas giant, (VIII) a planetoid belt, (IX) a ringed large gas giant, and (X) a small ice giant form the outer system.
Tander Subsystem[edit]
The companion is Tander, a dim red subdwarf star that lies approximately 1450 AU from Ennis. It has a luminosity of 0.002 Sols, a mass of 0.104 Sols, and a diameter of 145,000 km. (I) a dense atmosphere stormworld, (II) a very thin atmosphere iceworld, (III) a sparse icy planetoid belt, (IV) a small gas giant, (V) a vacuum iceworld, and (VI) a ringed small giant form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.
Mainworld Data[edit]
(V) Garth[edit]
(V) Garth is designated the mainworld. It orbits Ennis at a mean distance of 1.53 AU (228.9 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 5 years 317 days and a rotation period of 31 hours. The axial tilt is 16 degrees. Garth has a diameter of 10,173 km, a density of 5.55 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.80 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.63 bar and a composition of 77% nitrogen, 22% oxygen, and 1% argon, water vapour, carbon dioxide, neon and other trace gases. The atmospheric taint is caused by reproductive spores from the abundant plant life. Approximately 69% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.25m. Mean surface temperature: 28°C. The atmosphere is dynamic and strong weather systems driven by the star and the seas sweep across the globe. The climate is seasonal.
Satellite[edit]
Garth retains a single natural satellite, a vacuum ice-capped worldlet:
- (Va) Name (UWP H201000-0, orbiting at 12 Diameters/122,000 km)
Mainworld geography and topography[edit]
Total surface area: 325 million km², Land surface area: 101 million km², Water surface area: 224 million km².
Native lifeforms[edit]
Garth has extensive native life. Their metabolic functions power the process of atmospheric renewal.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
One culture is characterized by their extensive platform villages in the low wetlands. There are several distinct nation states living under a careful treaty-enforced detente. They had great success with a genetically modified Terran goat embryos. Their modified lungs permit life in this thin tainted atmosphere. These goats are used to produce an extremely high quality cheese. To the natives of this world, a large 200kg indigenous flying hunter is sacred. There are two competing religions. One worships animalistic fertility totems, the other worships a god of decay and death. This strange deity was adopted from a neighboring culture. It is monotheistic faith with an emphasis on renewal and reincarnation. One of the nations has a form of imperial government, they dwell mostly in the lush rainforests of this world. The other is ruled by a decentralized federation. Spores from the abundant plant life contribute to the atmospheric taint. Filter masks are integral to native garb. Elaborate helmets, colorful masks and intricate visors are critical to cultural identity. These indicate clan, family, employment guild, religion, and national affiliations. People without masks are routinely ignored as non-people, their status is unrecognized. Only specially trained merchant guild members are equipped to deal with the unmasked.
World starport[edit]
Garth has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.
World technology level[edit]
Garth possesses a Technology Level of TL–4.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Telephone and telegraphs, widespread printing.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early electricity, hydrocarbon internal combustion.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Trains and early automobiles.
- Water: Clippers and steam ships.
- Air: Dirigibles, balloons, very basic rockets.
World government[edit]
Garth has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.
