Era: New Era
Pagaton has a comfortably breathable atmosphere. The system has a population between 1 and 10 billion sophonts. It is a member of Regency of Deneb in the Plankwell Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector.
- A common variant on the name is Pegaton.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)

History & Background (Dossier)
Some suspect that there was a population on this world by the 400's, who were refugees from the Sindalian Empire. Others suspect that there were secret waves of Imperial immigrants hiding from the authorities.
Pagaton was originally settled fairly early in the Imperial Era, by a consortium of diverse groups from Mora, Trin, and planets in the Deneb Sector. At the time, it was a garden planet, and the various colony groups did not interact much since they were placed on separate large islands.
About 600, the planet began sliding into an Ice Age. Trade with other planets had always been marginal due to the disadvantageous position of the system, off the Spinward Main, and as more and more of the world's resources were channeled into survival-related activities, exports fell off, causing fewer traders to arrive, creating a vicious cycle which did not end until the planetary tech level dropped to 4.
Some trade has resumed since the reopening of the starport in the neighboring Binges system in 1057 drew traders through the little cluster, but the main export, furs, does not generate enough foreign exchange credits to engage in any sort of large scale rebuilding effort.
The large number of competing governments exacerbate the situation, since they tend to use what foreign exchange they have to equip their armed forces in an effort to seize or influence the distribution of vital resources (such things as ice free ports and easily recoverable iron and coal deposits). Since the best the planet could hope for is to become an agricultural world, the interest of offworld powers is extremely limited. Small groups of low tech mercenaries, from planets such as Aki or Tarkine, will occasionally hire themselves out on Pagaton for 'real life' training.
With a planetary population of about 900 million, the few islands which are fortunate enough to reside in the narrow habitable zone are fairly crowded, adding to the misery of the unfortunate inhabitants. Only the presence of edible native vegetation which will grow in the harsh equatorial environment, and the extensive use of sea life for sustenance, allows the continuation of human life on the planet.
World Starport
Pagaton has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World Technology Level
Pagaton possesses a Technology Level of TL–4.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Telephone and telegraphs, widespread printing.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early electricity, hydrocarbon internal combustion.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Trains and early automobiles.
- Water: Clippers and steam ships.
- Air: Dirigibles, balloons, very basic rockets.
World Government
Pagaton is governed by a Religious Dictatorship. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy). There is a powerful independent organization, the state religion, which has influence or direct control of the government. Like the bureaucratic governments this may simply be a strong influence with a secular government, be direct influence by virtue of controlling who may be in the leadership, or be a direct theocracy where the church leadership and bureaucracy is the government.
