Shimjan is a preindustrial world.

  • As a preindustrial world, this planet cannot yet manufacture enough high-technology resources to support a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • This world hopes to one day be one of the subsector's industrial powerhouses, but hasn't yet realized that dream. The leaders of this world are regularly embarking on trade missions to attract more investment capital, worker-immigrants, and other necessary stepping stones to achieve this goal.
  • It is a member of the Sha Elden Lith Kindriu in the Gerockne Subsector of Gzirr!k'l Sector.
  • This system contains a Lithkind Legion of Starlight Naval Base.

System Data[edit]

Mainworld Data[edit]

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Shimjan is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Shimjan has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. While a Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Shimjan has 25-35% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants will be recycled.

History & Background[edit]

World Starport (Sp)[edit]

Shimjan has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

  • There is an associated Legion of Starlight Naval Base.

World Population (P)[edit]

Shimjan has a population of 80,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).

World Demographics[edit]

  • Lithkind, 95%
  • As with any Lithkind world, society is split between separate, complimentary male and female settlements, divided by the "Crimson Wall", both a physical and a conceptual divide.

World Languages[edit]

World Government (G)[edit]

Shimjan is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy, and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. This ruling bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucractic apparatus or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence, like the military.

A paired set of male and female bureaucratic ministries help govern this world.

World Law Level (L)[edit]

Shimjan has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All blade weapons and firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

Law emphasizes settlement between individuals and clans rather than state authority. Because of their belief in reincarnation, Lithkind have been known to continue blood-debts and blood-feuds that last centuries. In an effort to control bloodshed, a justified blood-feud (known as an ariseth) is legally recognized if registered with local government bodies.

In Lithkind society, almost everyone carries some form of weapon, even if it's only a ceremonial knife or needler.

World Technology Level (TL)[edit]

Shimjan possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Military[edit]

  • Legion of Midnight (Infantry and Air-Space Transport, female)
  • Legion of Starlight (Navy, male)

World Culture[edit]

At the heart of the Lithkind belief system is faith in reincarnation. When a child claws its way from the mother's womb, it is assumed to be the reincarnation of its father (if male) or mother (if female). When the litter is larger, it is assumed that the souls have "split" among the children -- this is a good sign, showing that the parents' souls have grown in strength.

Many Lithkind are believers in Xyastra, a complex astrological and necromantic system, in which sympathetic magic is supposedly used to alter probability.
