Orowan is a non-agricultural, pre-industrial vacuum world, which warrants hazardous environment precautions.

  • Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
  • It is unable to produce quality foodstuffs and must import them.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • Its economy and population are slowly growing and living conditions are expected to improve in the near future barring outside forces.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Orowan Subsector of Halcyon Sector.
  • This world-system has a Military Base, usually associated with military ground forces, which may be located on or off-world.

Astrography and Planetology[edit]

This star system is detailed using the Fringian Variant System Description.

Orowan has a solitary primary star.

System Data[edit]

Amadur-Orowan System[edit]

The primary is Amadur, a gigantic orange bright giant star. It has a luminosity of 2138 Sols, a mass of 13.4 Sols and a diameter of 153 million km – the corona extends as far as 1.02 AU, to orbital position (IV). The inner system consists of (IV) an extremely hot large gas giant orbiting close to the surface of the star, (VIII) a sparse stony planetoid belt, and (IX) a vacuum inner world – orbital positions (V), (VI) and (VII) are empty. (X) Perrin, a small gas giant, orbits within the habitable zone; (Xb) Orowan is its outer moon and is designated the mainworld. (XI) a small gas giant, (XII) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (XIII-I) a vacuum worldlet, and (XIII-II) a vacuum iceworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

(X) Perrin[edit]

(X) Perrin is a small gas giant that orbits Amadur at a mean distance of 37.6 AU (orbital position (X), 5.62 billion km), within the habitable zone, and has an orbital period of 63 years. It has a diameter of 39,000 km and is a heavily banded reddish-brown colour. It retains a family of two major satellites of which the outer, (Xb) Orowan, is designated the mainworld.

Mainworld Data[edit]

(Xb) Orowan[edit]

(Xb) Orowan is the outer of the two major moons of (X) Perrin and is designated the mainworld. Orowan orbits its parent world at a mean distance of 30 diameters (1.18 million km), with an orbital period of 6 days 9 hours and a rotation period of 6 days 9 hours: Orowan is tidally locked to Perrin. It has an axial tilt of 3 degrees. Orowan has a diameter of 4,643 km, a density of 4.43 g/cm³ and a surface gravity of 0.29 G. Tidal stresses caused by the gravitational pull of Perrin cause occasional geological activity. The atmosphere is rated as Vacuum. It has no hydrosphere. Mean surface temperature: 170°C in sunlight, -10°C in shadow.

Mainworld geography and topography[edit]

Total surface area: 68 million km².

Native lifeforms[edit]

No world in the Orowan system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The rising technology levels have brought about the end of most older religious traditions. Ethics is still a required course at all the universities within the system. Personal freedoms are still valued within the constraints of communal survival in an inherently hostile environment. Some of their most popular exports are derived from their famous academies dedicated to advanced computational mathematics. Their predictive algorithms, and spatial modeling software is among the best in the subsector. The predictive fire control software is in great demand among navies in the sector and beyond. Some has even found its way onto civilian and corsair vessels. Military software in general has been a booming cottage industry and there are many competitive companies and distribution outlets vie for market share. These exports are used to secure the massive shipments of raw natural resources necessary to maintain eco-habitats among the desolate rocks of the system. Most governmental positions must be achieved by passing strict aptitude tests. Personal self improvement is seen as essential for survival here. The gender ratio slightly favors males currently. Families tend to be small. Excessive exposure to radiation due to the lack of magnetospheres and atmospheres results in shorter lifespans, 68.6 years is the current average despite access to advanced medical technology. Many space related jobs in construction and fabrication which often involve EVA in spacesuits involves accidents and risks which dramatically lower the average lifespans. Hazard pay is an accepted way of life here. Warrior professions are admired, but natives rarely pursue military careers for themselves. The warrior mystique is a popular and respected theme. The defense forces are very small and are all volunteer. Showing strong emotions in public is considered a taboo, and is frowned upon. Citizens are expected to communicate respectfully in public. Emotional outbursts are a very private affair. There is some rumors that hint at an element of organized crime at work in the system. Its true influence and corruption is difficult to accurately gauge. Most locally produced boats are very fast with very powerful engines. Subdued coloration and stealth coated hull platelets are a very popular design option. The boatyards are high quality and reliability but small production runs and slow production rates are common as each craft is seen as a work of art. Pride prohibits anything leaving the assembly yard slipways that isn't as close to perfect as possible, tested and certified. There are less than 70,000 tons of locally made craft in use at any one time.

World starport[edit]

Orowan has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World technology level[edit]

Orowan possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.

World government[edit]

Orowan is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is by representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referenda, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.

World military[edit]

There is one army Protected Forces battalion equipped with forty imported TSF 3T Moccasin class Grav APCs and carrying 120 crew and 360 troopers clad in TL–11 Combat Armor. There are transports available to carry this battalion to other systems for planetary operations. The APCs are capable of Protected Forces operations at home.
