Later is an agricultural, nonindustrial world still lacking adequate means to expand its economy.

• As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
• It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
• It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Hedreunides Subsector of Matzen Sector.

• This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below technology standards for Charted Space.
• This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.
• This world is controlled by Phaeturn.
• The mainworld name is pronounced as "Lay-ter"

Mainworld Data

• Later has an orbital period of 83.28 standard days.
• The planet has no rotation and is tidally locked to its sun. This results in large areas of the planet being entirely unsuitable for life to exist due to extreme temperature and/or exposure to the suns radiation.
• Later has an axial tilt of 36 degrees
• The twilight region of the planet although cold with an average temperature of -6 degrees is heavily populated with agricultural facilities growing a wide range of produce able to grow in both ocean based and land based farming communities.

Mainworld Size (S)

Later is a Big World between 13,600km and 15,200km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 1G and 1.3G. The horizon will appear about 5.4km away. Vessels with only 1G of thrust should avoid landing on this world.

• The planet has a diameter of 8791 miles / 13922 kilometres
• Later has a molten core with a density of 0.9 standard.
• The surface gravity of the planet is 1.01 standard and is therefore classified as having normal gravity.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Later has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. While a Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

• The atmosphere of Later is listed as "Standard Oxygen Nitrogen mixed with Pollutant Taint". This does mean that those trying to operate outside of sealed locations will require breathing and filtration equipment to protect the individual.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

Later has 65-75% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has significant large liquid bodies. Wilderness refueling is possible.

• The surface of the planet has been calculated to have 72% coverage. The only significant landmasses are the hundred of small islands and archipelagos that are scattered across the twilight region.
• The light side of the planet is barren and once large seas and oceans are now little more than barren wasteland. The dark side of the planet the seas and oceans are frozen with the ice covering any potential landmasses.
• The water is tainted by the pollutants in the atmosphere and is actually dangerous to swim in without protective clothing.

• Later has no native life. It is possible life did exist at an earlier period in its life however its location and tidal lock effectively removed the chance of native life flourishing.

History & Background (Dossier)

World Starport (St)

Later has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

• The starport that serves as the link to the rest of the subsector is located on one of the many islands located in the twilight zone and is actually closer to the dark side of the planet.
• The starport is the one place on the planet where it is possible to obtain higher tech level goods than those typically found on the surface, however, these are expensive and uncommon.
• The starport itself does not see significant traffic outside of the small independent traders and the large builk freighters carrying produce and other items between Later and Phaeturn.
• The starport maintains 12 landing pads that can accomodate up to 500 displacement ton vessels and 1 large pad that can accomodate a vessel of up to 2000 displacement tons. In addition it also maintains a small airport for planetary aircraft that moves goods around the planetary surface.

Facilities

Port facilities within the system include:

• There are number warehouse facilities located around the port but the only dedicated warehouse sits alongside the largest landing pad. All other facilities are rented on a first come first served basis. This does of course cause some logistics problems when a warehouse is nowhere near the landing pad for a given cargo.
• The startport maintains robust border controls for both locals and travellers who may wish to leave the starport and either travel off world or travel further onto the planetary surface.
• The usual collection of food joints, cantinas and hotels can also be found here although its fair to say they are somewhat past their prime.

Later possesses a Technology Level of TL–5.

• Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Telephone, radio, and television.
• Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Electricity, hydrocarbon internal combustion, and the most fundamental atomic energy.
• Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
  • Land: Ground cars or automobiles and tracked vehicles.
  • Water: Large ships and submersibles with steel hulls.
  • Air: Early aircraft including seaplanes and very early unmanned rockets.

Later has a Captive Government or Colony. The world is ruled by an external government, there is no self-rule. A colony or conquered area. The local government is an oligarchy appointed by, and answerable only to, the external government.

• The planet is governed by the government located on Phaeturn.
• The Phaeturn to Later relationship is interesting however due to the huge technological difference between the two worlds, TL:D to TL:5 respectively. The government on Phaeturn see's no reason to increase the technological capability of the people of Phaeturn and they in turn have never really know any different to understand what theyve never had. Phaeturn runs Later via several councils. They maintain a representation at each of the major councils who in turn are locally elected officials who represent the people.
• In times gone past where Later has required assistance eg natural disaster or other need for support then Phaeturn has stepped in. This makes them appear to almost be a "nurturing" organisation that people of Later respect to a certain degree.

World Military

• Later has no military to speak of. It does maintain a number of police forces that operate across the planet although there is little co-operation between them.
• The starport is protected by personel from Phaeturn.

World Law (L)

Later has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Personal concealable firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited. Local Law Level UWP

• The law is applied in a territorial manner across the planet. In differing urban areas the law is applied differently. This can cause problems for the unwary Traveller and its always better to check than be sorry.

Later has a population of c9,000,000

Urbanization

• Later has got well over 100 larger urban areas that span not only the small islands and archipelagos but are also located on pontoon type areas floating on the planets fairly sedate oceans.
• The urban areas are all airlock sealed due to the tainted atmosphere but each of them is surrounded by the the smog of thousands of chimney stacks pumping out smoke from the steam pumps that not only provide heat and light but also the power for the production of agroproducts and durables.
• Each urbanisation maintains massive agricultural facilities that not only provide food stuffs for Later but also Phaeturn and the wider subsector. These industrial greenhouses are used to constantly produce foodstuffs and other agricultural produce.
• Although technically the people of Later can develop nuclear reactors they are yet to do so as they are lacking the materials needed. Instead society is powered by steam. Cheap to produce and generates plenty of power. Yes it might pollute the atmosphere but its a small price to pay for their continued existence.
