Izyme is a high-population, pre-rich garden world with a billion or more sophonts, and a near-ideal utopian environment conducive to most sophont life, but still lacks adequate population to expand its economy to a rich status.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

The planet's name is derived from that of a native plant, the Iz tree, and means something akin to "forest of Iz trees".

Stellar Data[edit]

Izyme has a solitary primary star.

Mainworld Data[edit]

Izyme has a day length of 32 hours.

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Izyme is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Izyme has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. A Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear and will likely be easy for most sophonts to breathe.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Izyme has 55-65% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has significant large liquid bodies. Wilderness refueling is possible.

Mainworld Topography and Geography[edit]

Garden World Type 03d.jpg

Satellites[edit]

Izyme has a single moon, named Trishkat.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

World Starport (Sp)[edit]

Izyme has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

  • There is an associated Legion of Starlight Naval Base.

World Population[edit]

Izyme has a population of 3,000,000,000 sophonts (billions).

World Demographics[edit]

Over 90% of the population are native Lithkind. Communities of aliens -- notably, Hivers, Krotan and Humans -- live here too. Humanoid aliens must adhere to Lithkind sex segregation. (This is not an issue for Hivers either way, being both non-humanoid and monosex).

  • Of the Lithkind population, 95% are of the Jethrac subrace, with the remaining 5% consisting of Cythrac.

World Languages[edit]

Urbanization[edit]

All urban areas are twinned, with a male and female settlement divided by the Crimson Wall. It is taboo to venture into the other sex's territory. Mating (immediately fatal to males, with pregnancy fatal to females in turn) occurs in highly controlled and ritualistic circumstances.

The lack of lighting and favored dark green and gray colour schemes make a Lithkind city resemble a giant forest. Windows are uncommon if air conditioning is available. Many buildings have sub-basements with underground fungus gardens. These are often beautiful, with carefully sculpted terrain and quiet, still pools.

About 2% of Lithkind still dwell in traditional Iz trees, mainly in rural areas of Izyme.

World Government (G)[edit]

Izyme is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.

A paired set of male and female bureaucratic ministries help govern this world.

World Military[edit]

  • Legion of Midnight (Infantry and Air-Space Transport, female)
  • Legion of Starlight (Navy, male)

Izyme is notable for the "Web of Warding", an automated planetary defense system with its command based on the world's moon. The Web of Warding is essentially an intelligent minefield in orbit around Izyme and scuttered among other strategic sites in its star system. Combined with the Legion of Midnight's control of fighter wings and deep meson gun sites, it is sufficient to protect Izyme against anything short of a battle fleet.

World Law Level (L)[edit]

Izyme has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms except shotguns, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

Law emphasizes settlement between individuals and clans rather than state authority. Because of their belief in reincarnation, Lithkind have been known to continue blood-debts and blood-feuds that last centuries. In an effort to control bloodshed, a justified blood-feud (known as an ariseth) is legally recognized if registered with local government bodies.

In Lithkind society, almost everyone carries some form of weapon, even if it's only a ceremonial knife or needler.

World Technology Level (TL)[edit]

Izyme possesses a Technology Level of TL–14 or TL-E in Hexadecimal Notation.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early meson communicators.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Miniature super-batteries, early collectors, and advanced fusion plants.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:

World Culture[edit]

At the heart of the Lithkind belief system is faith in reincarnation. When a child claws its way from the mother's womb, it is assumed to be the reincarnation of its father (if male) or mother (if female). When the litter is larger, it is assumed that the souls have "split" among the children -- this is a good sign, showing that the parents' souls have grown in strength.

Many Lithkind are believers in Xyastra, a complex astrological and necromantic system, in which sympathetic magic is supposedly used to alter probability.

Lithkind fashions have changed little over the centuries, and are conservative and homogenous; with sexual attraction playing no role in society, clothing tends toward the utilitarian. In cold or wet weather, males add a poncho and beret, while females wear a hooded cloak but go bare-headed. In hot weather, nudity is common.
