The Evantha of Temeraire (Daibei 3020) are a Minor Non-Human Race with a semi-humanoid appearance. They are technologically sophisticated sophonts.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The ancestors of the Evantha were mountain-dwelling avian carnivores who hunted the skies of their homeworld in packs.

Winged hunters most comfortable in low gravity, the Evantha (or Vanthians, as Humans of the Third Imperium call them) have been Imperial citizens for millennia, but have managed to retain a distinct culture. Recently unified under a charismatic dictator, they are moving toward closer integration with the Imperium, but not every Vanthian is willing to follow the path their leader has charted.

Biology (Physical Sophontology)[edit]

An adult Vanthian is about 1.5m tall, but weighs only 30 to 34 kilograms, males being slightly more heavily built. The humanoid head slants backward, ending in a curving sail-like crest. The long neck leads to the humanoid torso that terminates in a fan tail. The tail acts as a rudder when the Vanthian is airborne and supports the body when standing. Where the arms would be on a Human, a Vanthian has great wings -- folded down to serve as clumsy legs while the Vanthian is standing upright, spread out during flight. The wings are feathered and end in bony vestigial claws that act like feet. Where a Human's legs would be the Vanthian has arms, ending in hands with three fingers, tipped with sharp claws, and two opposing "thumbs" on opposite sides of the hand.

Climate & Ecotope (Environment)[edit]

This species holds the following environmental preferences:

  • Terrestrial planet
  • Cold climate
  • Forested hilly and mountainous ecotopes
  • Low gravity
  • Dense atmosphere

Evantha have very pale skin, and eyes adapted to the weakened sunlight that penetrates their homeworld's dense atmosphere. As such, they are vulnerable in intense sun.

Anatomy & Physiology (Phenotype)[edit]

Sophontologists studying this species have discovered the following data.

Body Plan (Morphology)[edit]

  • Semi-humanoid
  • Bilateral symmetry (2-ial)
  • Biped (2-ped)
    • 2 limbs used for flying locomotion / ambulatory locomotion; "wing-legs"
    • 2 limbs used for gripping and manipulation; "arms"
    • 1 tail
  • Body consists of three segments
    • Head
    • Torso
    • Abdomen

Respiration (Reaction)[edit]

This species uses a conventional respiration cycle consisting of:

  • Oxygen-nitrogen inhalant
  • Carbon dioxide exhalant

Diet[edit]

Evantha are carnivores. They hunt socially (today on ranches near their settlements) but eat alone. Like many carnivores they are somewhat fussy eaters.

Milk and alcohol are both consumed, often mixed together.

Cultural Sophontology[edit]

Evantha young are very dependent on their parents. Children accompany parents as much as possible, at home and during work. This leads to an identity closely tied to family bonds. When they become adults, most Evantha find a substitute family by devoting themselves to a cause larger than themselves, not so much on its own merits as to give direction to their lives. As a result, there are many Evantha nations, political parties, and religions.

Few formalized procedures exist in Evantha society. Bureaucracy is alien to their culture; record-keeping is a necessary evil, but evil nonetheless.

Linguistics[edit]

A common language in modern times is Detran.

Numerous dialects and other languages exist in Evantha society, and many private and government organizations have their own secret languages known only to their initiates. Military units typically have exotic battle languages designed to rapidly convey information in combat.

Technology and Trade[edit]

The Evantha are similar to the Aslan in their preference for ornate, hand-crafted goods (that both races are carnivore pouncers is likely relevant here). Evantha equipment is beautifully made and unlikely to break but costs at least 50% more than equivalent Human items; the result of Evanthan preference for individuality and style at the cost of standardization.

History (Archaeological Sophontology)[edit]

Soon after attaining space flight (in -4238), the Evantha were contacted by the then-expansionist Vilani, who had detected the race's electromagnetic broadcasts. The Evantha were incorporated into the Ziru Sirka, the First Imperium, as a client race. The Vilani appear to have been largely indifferent to them, but the Evantha eventually spread to colonize some 17 star systems within the First Imperium, most within their home cluster. These worlds remained in contact during the Long Night as the Evantha Protectorate, and eventually all were absorbed into the Third Imperium.
