Desolate (Cr 0608) is a nonindustrial fluid world.

  • A fluid world has an oceanic geography consisting of heavily contaminated water or a substance such as ammonia, methane, hydrocarbons, or other exotic liquid.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Khouth Subsector of Corridor Sector in the Domain of Vland.
  • This world has an Imperial Way Station.

  • During the Long Night this world was named Khinukhin.

Description / Astrography & Planetology[edit]

The only free world around a lonely "bachelor" star, no one dared colonize this dangerous planet.

The system is part of the Atsah Cluster, also known in Corridor Sector as the Kiran Cluster.

Stellar Data[edit]

Mainworld Data[edit]

The world is wreathed in a deadly cloud of hydrofluoric acid, and possesses few resources worth exploiting, save chemicals processed for industrial purposes.

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Desolate is a Big World between 13,600km and 15,200km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 1G and 1.3G. The horizon will appear about 5.4km away. Vessels with only 1G of thrust should avoid landing on this world.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Desolate has a Corrosive Atmosphere and possesses a concentrated gas mix or unusual temperature which requires the use of a Hostile Environment Suit or Vacc Suit. TL–9 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Desolate has 35-45% of its surface covered by liquid water. There will be a number of small seas or one larger body of water. Wilderness refueling is possible.

History & Background / Dossier[edit]

Imperial High / Landed Nobility[edit]

Desolate, as a member world of the Third Imperium has a member of the Imperial Landed Nobility who acts as an Imperial representative to the world.

World Starport[edit]

Desolate has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

  • Desolate's orbital starport is a large structure but only a small part of it is a commercial port. Some of the rest is given over to bulk transport docks for the world's mineral and chemical exports but the largest segment is owned and operated by the Imperial Interstellar Scout Service as a way station. This installation was constructed to serve the express boat network, with extensive overhaul and servicing facilities for both X-boats themselves and the tenders that support them. There is also a well-equipped mental health facility specialising in preparing personnel for long periods alone in jumpspace.

World Technology Level[edit]

Desolate possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government[edit]

Desolate has no central government or substantial government apparatus; an Anarchy. The largest governmental structure would be a family, tribe, or single clan. The largest group will be between 50 and 100 individuals, and there may be dozens to hundreds of them. This governmental structure can be stable over long periods of time if the population remains small or geographically separated.

History: New Era[edit]

The small 1117 population inhabited a mostly automated orbiting starport, which quickly surrendered to the advancing Vargr.

  • The human staff was expelled to the Domain of Deneb, and the Irrgh Manifest Navy tried to convert the base into a naval storage facility.
  • A vampire ship blasted the station into debris in 1140, leaving a cloud of metal in geostationary orbit.
