Castrum is a high-population, industrial world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.

  • As an industrial world, this planet has well-developed manufacturing and processing industries. Manufactured goods are a major export item.
  • Its economy is rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to rapidly improve barring outside forces.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Diadem Subsector of Vanguard Reaches Sector.
  • This is a "Puzzle" world designated as an Amber Zone. Caution is advised since the world has an environment, laws, customs, life forms, or other conditions that are not well understood and might be a danger to a visitor.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

This system is part of the Diadem Main.

Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]

Castrum is a large, dense world with landmass divided into two large continents separated by an equatorial channel. Deforestation and strip mining have fouled the soil, though the vast interior deserts remain nearly pristine, albeit devoid of much life.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Castrum once hosted a rich variety of native life but centuries of pollution have degraded the environment, causing the extinction of much of the large fauna.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The people of Castrum, who proudly call themselves the Legion, have dedicated their lives to the worship of Aurelio, a supposedly immortal ruler with the power to cure the sick and intercede between his flock and a deified universe.

World Starport[edit]

Castrum has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

Urbanization[edit]

The world's cities are decayed to sprawling slums, while the air and water are fouled with the pollution of fossil fuels.

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Castrum possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
  • By decree Castrum is trapped at its current tech level. Computing devices and nuclear power are banned, limiting power production to a few giant hydro generator stations and many internal combustion power plants.
  • Visitors are expected to turn over all 'thinking devices' at the starport customs control point. This includes almost any item of TL-8 and above. Cyborgs are banned from entry.

World Government (G)[edit]

Castrum is governed by a Religious Dictatorship. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy). There is a powerful independent organization, the state religion, which has influence or direct control of the government. Like the bureaucratic governments this may simply be a strong influence with a secular government, be direct influence by virtue of controlling who may be in the leadership, or be a direct theocracy where the church leadership and bureaucracy is the government.

  • Aurelio and his Legion arrived in 738, displacing a small mining operation established decades earlier. Aurelio still rules from his now extensive palace grounds, occasionally appearing from his balcony to address crowds. Whether Aurelio is really a 400-year-old 'immortal', a series of clones, a robot, spends long periods in a Cryo Berth, or something else entirely, is a subject of clandestine speculation on Castrum -- and mild curiosity elsewhere.

World Military[edit]

The planetary defence grid relies on some imported technology from Hyperion and Baixing but satellite and radar coverage isn't universal. Assuming it is detected, a ship landing outside the designated ports will be pursued and attacked by locally produced aircraft.
