Newquay is a nonindustrial world, that requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.

  • In a technological universe, societies without industrial capability generally suffer as nearly all manufactured and high tech goods must be brought in at significant cost.
  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • This is a cold world with an overall climate that is at the lower temperature range of human-congruous sophont endurance.
  • It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Staai Subsector of Dark Nebula Sector.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)

A small planet with low gravity and a trace atmosphere, it is one of 16 bodies in this binary star system. Despite orbiting at 0.24 AU, the climate is frigid. The molten iron core is responsible for the 3.33 g/ml density of the tidally locked planet. Settlement is limited to the bright face.

Newquay has two stars in the star system.

History & Background (Dossier)

Newquay is a member of the Xianjin-Brimate Cluster, a cluster and important local trade route lying across parts of Canopus Sector, Dark Nebula Sector, and Magyar Sector.

The huge stars of the Hyades Cluster, a few parsecs away, cause significant interference, strange tones and noises, and heavy static on commo and sensors.

  • The Cluster is clearly visible to the naked eye from the surface of the world.

Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Confederation and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, but many see it as an act of duty to help protect the Solomani state and its interests.

In late 210, a series of losses in the Dark Nebula -- including at this world -- led members of the Tlaukhu to open negotiations with Human states in the region, including relative newcomer the Third Imperium. The Wuan Technology Association organised the discussions, which took 16 months to complete and ended with the Treaty of the Dark Nebula, ratified in 212.

Newquay eventually became a moderately populated and non-industrialized Solomani Confederation world located near the Aslan Hierate border in Staai Subsector. The system is a Confederation outpost with a single battalion garrison for defense.

Other Data

Non-canon: Slightly off the beaten path, this is not the typical path for Solomani war fleets headed for the Aslan border for patrols and military operations. The starport is a crude effort devoid of special features. Survival requirements dictated that most of the settlement be underground to protect the colonists from the ravages of the unshielded surface, a cold dry barren place pocked with craters and powdery impact dust. Originally, sophisticated mining rigs were delivered to cut tunnels and shafts into the crust in a detailed effort to find and exploit mineral deposits. Several sites showed promise, but this was never really a successful mining operation. The vacant tunnel network became the living quarters for the colonists and unemployed miners left behind. Over time their numbers grew and a society of sorts developed.
