Description (Specifications)

The Oo-ne-beto-pon-tee are a minor race native to Night in Core Sector. Resembling large caterpillars, the vocal range of most Oo-ne-beto-pon-tee is above the range of normal human hearing, leading to the human nickname for them of 'Whistlers'.

General Physiology

Oo-ne-beto-pon-tee adults have multi-segmented bodies, reminiscent of a caterpillar. Forty-five pairs of small legs provide locomotion and three pairs of larger legs serve as manipulators at the head end. Adults typically measure 40-60 centimetres long, with a mean mass around 25 kilograms.

There are four genders recognised in Oo-ne-beto-pon-tee physiology; male, female, neuter and matcher. The male and female are the only two genders capable of reproducing, the neuter performs a role similar to a 'worker' in most insectoid species, while the matcher fulfils a support role in reproduction. Only the neuter Oo-ne-beto-pon-tee can produce sounds at a sufficiently low-frequency for typical human hearing to detect, and thus are the only members of the race able to communicate with humans without the aid of technology.

General Psychology

Members of the neuter gender fulfil most active roles in Oo-ne-beto-pon-tee society outside of mating-related areas. The male, female and matcher's focus is predominantly concerned with the extensive rituals and requirements of Oo-ne-beto-pon-tee mating and reproduction. Each gender is extremely concerned, to the point of obsession, with their own interest and function. In the case of neuters, this has aided the technological advance of the species, which matches the highest levels of advancement within the Imperium.

History & Background (Dossier)

While it is not exactly when humans and Oo-ne-beto-pon-tee first made contact, first contact was made by the Vilani. Solomani settlers reached Night and made contact with the Oo-ne-beto-pon-tee during the Rule of Man.

Human visitors must be aware, and cautioned, that prolonged exposure to the pheremones of the Oo-ne-beto-pon-tee (which has become known as the 'Whistler effect' have an effect on their relationships, and removal from an environment after such exposure can cause adverse psychological effects which can continue for weeks.

Local Technology

Night possesses a Technology Level of TL–15 or TL-F in Hexadecimal Notation.

Local Government

Night is governed by a Charismatic Oligarchy, like a charismatic dictatorship in that a larger group has asserted their right to rule. The group will likely have better rules of succession than a single dictator and may last longer, or may transition to a non-charismatic dictatorship.

Local Law

Night has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (outside private residences or visiting starships).
