The rank of Brigadier (O7) is the senior-most field grade commissioned officer rank in the Imperial Marines and commands a Brigade or Regimental Combat Team or larger or oversees multiple Regimental Combat commands. A Brigadier is generally in overall command of all Marines assigned to a Numbered Fleet or Task Force.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
Each Brigade in the Imperial Marines and many Mercenary and those few Huscarle units of this size will be commanded by a Brigadier. Several staff posts at Subsector level or higher are also held by Officers with this rank.
- The equivalent rank in the Imperial Navy is Commodore (2nd Class).
- The equivalent rank in the Imperial Army GFC is Brigadier General.
- The equivalent rank in the Imperial Army NFC is Sea Commodore (2nd Class).
- The equivalent rank in the Imperial Army COACC is Air Commodore.
Note that there are very few Imperial Marine Brigades, and thus this rank is as often a staff rank as it is a field rank.
A Brigadier oversees the regiment assigned to each fleet. Their job is to coordinate their actions and advise the Fleet Admiral and civilian leadership on the current status of the Marines. The main focus is on gathering accurate data from Imperial Naval Intelligence and passing it along to the units in the field. The Brigadier's office is also responsible for recruiting and training new Marines in their fleet assigned area of responsibility (usually a single subsector). [1]
n.b. When Imperial Marines use the term "The Brigadier-General" they are referring to a Marine Brigadier (O7) who has been promoted to the superior General Officer rank and duties of a Marine Brigadier-General (O8a) who oversees all Marine operation within the local subsector or engagement region, and who in wartime may hold the higher position of "Marine General Marshal" (O8b).
The appointment to this rank attracts the title of Knight [2].
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The word "brigadier" derives from the same root as the word "brigade" but the precise origin of "brigade" is obscure. However, the title refers to The general officer who commands a brigade.
