It was designed following the Fifth Frontier War, as a result of the extremely poor performance of the then-current three classes of light fighters employed as auxiliaries by IGN warships. Lack of computer ability was the major complaint of the previous classes, and the Lance mounts a state of the art Computer-9. This is responsible for 75% of the total cost per unit, but the increase in capability is considered highly worthwhile by the pilots.
