Description (Planetology)

Acis is one of the longest continuously-settled planets on the Sindalian Main (AKA the Dustbelt), a narrow channel of star systems that stretches across the Trojan Reach (the area also known as the Outrim Void). Its breathable atmosphere, pleasant climate and active biosphere have made it a welcoming home to humans for over 2,500 years, since it was initially settled by Terran colonists.

	Remarks

Galatea's far companion, Polyphemus, is a smouldering M2 V red dwarf. The star is quite distant from the system primary, perched far in the outer zone. With no planets of its own, Polyphemus rarely receives visitors, leading a forlorn existence much like the creature from which it derives its name. The star has negligible effects on all but the outermost planetary bodies of the Acis system.

Mainworld Topography and Geography

Prior to colonisation, an advance team of planetologists studied Acis and determined that the closest approximation of the planet's geological age was the Devonian period of Terra (~400 million years ago).

Acis' 35 degree axial tilt exposes its poles to extreme temperature shifts and results in distinct seasons in the temperate zones and a propensity for deserts and steppes in the far northern and southern latitudes.

Native Lifeforms

The planet features abundant sea life and a fairly complex land-based ecosystem, dominated by amphibians. The flora is rich, supported by Acis' size, hydrography and dense atmosphere. In addition to its native biosphere, the presence of rich minerals and nutrients in the planet's soil makes it an ideal candidate to host a veritable bounty of agricultural products.

History & Background (Dossier)

Acis is a rich, agricultural garden world located on the Sindalian Main in Dpres Subsector of the Trojan Reach.

• It is Non-Aligned and the only important world in the subsector, and along with Tyr (Trojan Reach 1518) is a major power on the Main. Acis lies on the Florian Route, an important trade route between the Imperium and the Florian League.
• Exiles from Acis played a crucial role in the history of the Main when they brought in Aslan mercenaries from the Glorious Empire, who ended the Tyrian Lordships with a bloodbath.

The first settlers landed at the southern shores of the planet’s largest continent where the mouth of a river empties into one of its oceans. The river was reddish brown due to the high iron and red phosphorus content in the runoff of a nearby mountain range, the bloody colour of the water inspiring the name of the region and eventually the planet itself. In ancient Terran mythology, Acis, who loved the nereid Galatea, was crushed by a boulder thrown by the jealous cyclops, Polyphemus.

Galatea, lamenting the loss of her lover, transformed his blood into the River Acis. The mythological lore of Acis was extended to the system’s primary and secondary stars, which were named Galatea and Polyphemus. Galatea, a white-hot F7 V star, will have a shorter life span than cooler dwarf stars. Most F-type stars burn their fuels too quickly to develop the complex array of conditions required to foster life, even when hospitable planets are in the star’s habitable zone. Acis has bucked that trend.

World Starport (Sp)

Acis has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Population (P)

Acis has a population of 60,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).

World Government (G)

Acis is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.

World Law Level (L)

Acis has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms except shotguns, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

World Technology Level (TL)

Acis possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.
