Viceroy is a nonindustrial world, that requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.
- In a technological universe, societies without industrial capability generally suffer as nearly all manufactured and high tech goods must be brought in at significant cost.
- As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Menorial Subsector of Trojan Reach Sector.
Description (Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Mainworld Data[edit]
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Viceroy is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Viceroy has a pressure of 2.5 or greater atmospheres. A Dense & High Pressure Atmosphere typically requires no survival gear under many conditions. Pressure at or below sea level is too great to support life but the atmosphere may be breathable at higher altitudes. TL–5 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Viceroy has 25-35% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants will be recycled.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Viceroy is located on the Florian Corridor trade route. Though non-aligned, it is considered a protectorate of the Florian League, having agreed to give extremely favourable trading rights to the Florians in exchange for defence.
Viceroy had previously established trade ties with the nearby Strend Cluster, but found that they couldn't keep up with demand without enhancing their labour pool. They began to regularly attack Halka, taking slaves for their industrial enterprises. The Halka were easily captured and controlled, having been culturally conditioned by the Florian caste system to accept subordination.
After centuries of allowing sporadic slave raids by Viceroy, the Florian League had suddenly had enough of it, and imposed itself on the Viceroy government. The final agreement saw the Florians take responsibility for Viceroy's security.
Vorkash Manufacturing is engaged in extensive mining operations in the deep, rocky crevices of Viceroy; it essentially runs the entire planet.
World Starport (Sp)[edit]
Viceroy has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
- The starport handles ore shipments from the planet's mining operations. The Downport supplies living quarters for company employees, an office complex, and centers for entertainment of off-duty workers. The Highport has only essential personnel. It prevents unwelcome guests from coming down to the planet, offering refueling and modest repair facilities before visitors are hurried on their way.
World Population (P)[edit]
Viceroy has a population of 600,000 sophonts (hundreds of thousands).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
World Government (G)[edit]
Viceroy is governed by a Corporate Polity, having a single corporation with a typical corporate structure as a government. Essentially, this is a "company town" (or world). The typical corporate-run world usually has a single purpose. Examples include mining, agriculture, or other kinds of resource extraction. But rather than a simple base of operations, there are facilities for housing workers and their families, including hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure. How, or if, the children of the workers are incorporated into the workforce varies with companies. The corporation running the world may be a subsidiary of a larger interstellar corporation.
Vorkash Manufacturing is a vertical monopoly on Viceroy, engaged in all aspects of production.
World Military[edit]
Viceroy fields at least one patrol ship; an old model obtained by Vorkash Manufacturing as military surplus.
World Law Level (L)[edit]
Viceroy has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Personal concealable firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.
World Technology Level (TL)[edit]
Viceroy possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-3.
