Sturgeon's Law is a nonindustrial, fluidic hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.
- A fluid world has an oceanic geography of a liquid other than water such as ammonia, methane, hydrocarbons, or other exotic liquids.
- Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Old Islands Subsector of Reft Sector.
Description / Astrography & Planetology[edit]
The plant forms on the land surface metabolize metal and human protoplasm with equal ease. [2]

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Settled when the sublight ship Infinité crashed in the planet's single sea. [2]
There was no prospect of rescue; even if another ship was sent to Sturgeon’s Law it wouldn't arrive for years. Luckily, the Infinité mission was well supplied, and the water covering the ship kept out the atmosphere and the deadly moss spores. The ship’s workshops were used to build crude submersibles which ventured out in search of resources. Slowly the battle for survival became an attempt to build a place to live.
After the propagation of Jump drive through the Islands Cluster, Sturgeon’s Law finally received offworld visitors. They found an underwater settlement housing about 30,000 people, supported by seabed farming and some minor industry.
During the Regency era, Sturgeon's Law was abandoned and interdicted until it could be certified free of Virus. [3]
World Starport[edit]
Sturgeon's Law has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World Technology Level[edit]
Sturgeon's Law possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
- Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
- Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
- Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
- FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.
World Government[edit]
Sturgeon's Law is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.

Historical Note: European Space Agency Long-range Colony Mission[edit]
From entry: European Space Agency Long-range Colony Mission
In all their journeys, only one ship was lost: Infinité, from Amondiage (Reft 2325), made a forced landing on Sturgeon's Law with a load of colonists from New Home (Reft 1925). Crew and colonists were forced to settle on this uninviting planet and were cut off from the outside for hundreds of years. It was fortunate for them that they landed in the planet’s single sea: ...the plant-forms growing on the land surface metabolize metal and human protoplasm with equal ease. [2]
