Persistent and dangerous offenders are incarcerated in custom-built penal institutions located on remote asteroids in the Sansterre system. This is not so much a punishment as a way to keep them well away from mainstream society. Most of the penal asteroids are also mining colonies.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
A water world on the coreward edge of the Islands Cluster, Sansterre is a representative democracy with extensive underwater settlements scattered all across the world's ocean bottoms. Its major resource colony, at St. Denis (Reft 2423), provides some surface agricultural produce.[2]
World Starport[edit]
Sansterre has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
Economy[edit]
One of the main export products of Sansterre is a line of Jump-capable mining ships. These are sold to clients all across the Islands, though Serendip Belt is a major competitor and does not buy foreign-made vessels. Sansterran mining ships can be encountered in independent hands or serving world governments throughout the Islands region.
