Mainworld Data[edit]

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Osaka is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Osaka has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. A Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear and will likely be easy for most sophonts to breathe.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Osaka has 65-75% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has significant large liquid bodies. Wilderness refueling is possible.

Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Osaka was once a part of the Syzlin Empire, but became independent through a bloody revolution in 778. The collapsing Empire subsequently withdrew from Tsu, and Osakan forces moved in. Tsu welcomed the arrival of these forces, and signed a mutual protection treaty. Between Tsu and the outpost at Bura, Osaka liked to consider itself a multistellar state, and spoke of "Greater Osaka" as a pocket empire. That supposed status, and the possession of a high technology base, gave Osaka a certain prestige in dealing with local non-aligned worlds in the 990s, but nothing ever came of the "empire".

Osaka has relatively good relations with the Karhyri.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Osaka has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

  • There is an associated Naval Base producing home-grown military vessels.

World Population (P)[edit]

Osaka has a population of 600,000,000 sophonts (hundreds of millions).

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Osaka possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government (G)[edit]

Osaka is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy, and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. This ruling bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucractic apparatus or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence, like the military.

World Military[edit]

A few Jump-capable vessels are operated, but most mobile operations (when they occur) are undertaken by non-Jump ships transported by vessels described as "merchant combat tenders". Osakan merchant vessels comprise a central spindle which mounts light defenses and to which a variety of modules can be fitted. Most commonly these are fuel and cargo pods. Some pods are streamlined and capable of independent maneuver (though their sensors are limited and direction by the parent craft is useful.)

Timeline[edit]

  • Deep in the Long Night: Syzlin, a subject world of the short-lived Kaiter Hegemony, gains control of a small fleet of starships in a military rebellion. These ships are used to drive Kaiter forces from the local cluster.
  • -150: Syzlin begins to expand and takes full control of its cluster as the Syzlin Empire.
  • Circa 500: The Empire peaks at 24 systems.
  • 778: A rebellion on Osaka triggers the partial collapse of the Syzlin Empire, reducing it to six systems.
  • Circa 800: A wave of reform sweeps through the remaining Syzlin Empire systems. A brief but bitter civil war results in a republic replacing the empire.
