Nessuro is an agricultural, nonindustrial world still lacking adequate means to expand its economy.
- As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Four Corners Subsector of Vanguard Reaches Sector.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
This system is located on the Serpent Trace.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
Native Lifeforms[edit]
A potentially deadly floral allergen makes life on Nessuro difficult to those not immune or adapted. The grasses in question cover most of the arable land and produce pollen for more than half the short Nessuro year.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Unless a starship is capable of jump-4, Nessuro is a necessary stop along the Serpent Trace from the Diadem Main in order to reach the Colonnade Province. The system has only one convenient source of fuel -- the planet itself.
The first colonists arrived in 645. A year later, half had died from an anaphylactic reaction to the omnipresent pollen. A combination of recessive traits left one in 12 Humans (and Vargr) immune to the effects of the allergen. Almost a third of the population was able to eventually desensitise to a point. Now, original colonists and subsequent settlers form three communities: Adapted, Conditioned and Protected.
- An Adapted community is like any other colonial settlement; residents live and work in the open and maintain a normal lifestyle.
- The Conditioned live in protected settlements with mudrooms for cleaning of clothes and equipment, and showers to remove pollen from hair and skin. Children are raised in protected creches, gradually exposed to Nessuro pollen over the course of the first year of their lives.
- The Protected live in sealed settlements, little different than those on a hostile world. Genetic engineering could correct susceptibility but that solution is expensive and requires technology beyond any available in the Four Corners or the Diadem Main.
Occasionally the child of Adapted parents is born with mutations leaving them susceptible to the pollen. Most of these children are adopted into Conditioned or Protected settlements, never to return to their birth communities.
Portmanteau Shipping Services maintains a message reception centre at Nessuro.
World Starport[edit]
Nessuro has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
- The highport is little more than a giant fuel tank with a small central facility that includes a medical lab to conduct genetic testing on anyone wishing to travel to the surface.
- As the only source of fuel in the system, Nessuro Highport charges double for unrefined fuel, although berthing is free for the first week.
