Mapepire Balsayn is a ring of many small worldlets (planetoids AKA an "asteroid belt"), not capable of retaining an atmosphere or water, and are both non-agricultural and nonindustrial in nature.

  • These worldlets warrant hazardous environment precautions.
  • Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
  • They require extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • The worldlets are, for the most part, unable to produce quality foodstuffs and must import them.
  • These worldlets have very few prospect for economic expansion.
  • This world is also the overall capital of an interstellar government with the massive extra trade and prestige associated with that role.
  • This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or over technology standards for Charted Space.
  • It is a member of the Mapepire Cluster in the Mapepire Subsector of Beyond Sector.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

The "mainworld" in fact consists of habitats carved from the rings of Arima, a gas giant orbiting just inside the jump shadow of one of the stars. Seven huge habitats account for 60% of the 700 million inhabitants. The largest habitat is Scarboro, a hollow moonlet spun to produce artificial gravity. Following Scarboro in orbit is Port Balsayn, the starport and main shipyard.

Planets include:

  • Arima: A small gas giant
  • Dash: A small planet in the outsystem for which the system was once named.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The Mapepire Cluster maintains friendly relations with the Third Imperium. This world, like all Cluster worlds, maintains a Traveller's Aid Society hostel, and has a branch of the Imperial Express Bank present.

World Starport[edit]

Mapepire Balsayn has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Timeline[edit]

  • 638: Pirate captain Mapepire Balsayn and his crew arrive. Balsayn builds his first base into an icy moonlet within the rings of Arima.
  • 645: A fleet of seven ships operates out of the base; Scarboro Habitat begins construction.
  • 660: Scarboro acquires a shipyard and growing startown district.
  • 672: Mapepire Balsayn declares himself Duke Mapepire, naming the system, ring and government after himself.
  • 703: Mapepire abdicates in favour of his daughter Antionette Balsayn in 703.
