History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Capable of carrying up to 20.0 kg in its talons, the bird was trained and used like the carrier pigeon of Terra (Solomani Rim 1827). The kankurur could carry small cargos as well as paper messages.
The kankurur has lent its name to the Kankurur-class G-Carrier used by the Scouts and Navy of the Third Imperium.
A Vilani legend is told of two flying creatures -- the large, swift kankurur, and the small, slow garu. The gods staged a long-distance flying contest to see which of the two creatures would be given the honour of a constellation in the heavens. The over-confident kankurur wasted his time showing off his great flying skill to the gods by flying to great heights, swooping, and trying to win favor by exhibiting his great ability. Meanwhile, the garu quietly flew the distance as prescribed by the gods, and won the contest. So the garu was given a bright, impressive constellation in the night skies of Vland, while the kankurur has no constellation in his honour.
