The J'aadje of Gaajpadje (Reaver's Deep 1124) are a technologically developing Minor Race with a humanoid appearance.

Physiology & Environment[edit]

They are slender (with an average mass of 60 kg), agile, golden-skinned bipeds.

J'aadje breathe through "vents" in their necks (at the side below the jawline), and lack true noses, but their faces project forward over their mouths to form blunt triangular "snouts." Their limbs feature flexible articulation completely unlike Human arms or legs, and their hands have two opposable thumbs and five other very flexible fingers, radiating from a near-circular palm.

Diet[edit]

J'aadje and Humans can eat each other's foodstuffs, with a few exceptions, although some caution and vitamin supplements might be advised. J'aadje cooking is spicy and is usually accompanied by a fermented tree-sap that is mildly intoxicating in very large quantities. Human food strikes J'aadje as bizarre, but tolerable in emergencies. Alcohol, though, makes them irritable or ill.

Psychology & Philosophy[edit]

The J'aadje are generally peaceful and friendly toward each other, and are likewise courteous toward off-worlders.

Their society is based largely upon Ku'densharll, a form of charismatic status. It has been variously translated as "charisma", "prowess", "elegance", or "prestige". Having access to wealth or power, a J'aadje can put on displays that permit them to gain more, enabling them to dominate their societies. However, because Ku'densharll is only really gained among those who can see a display in person, an oligarch can rarely dominate more than one city and its environs, and usually has several rivals even in that area. Thus, higher levels of social organization depend on negotiations or alliances between oligarchs.

The intricate rituals and formalities that the J'aadje have evolved to demarcate subtle distinctions in their society basically ossified that society. It isn't that the J'aadje dislike change in itself, so much that any change causes too much trouble for too many individuals.

Culture, Society, Technology & Trade[edit]

J'aadje civilization places little importance on technology, instead stressing art, poetry, and dance. Graceful and delicate art forms and workmanship of high-commercial quality are the norm, fetching excellent prices among admiring off-world buyers.

The recurrent pattern of J'aadje history was a new city-state rising on the basis of an advantage in agriculture, trade, or technology, falling under the sway of a prince or council, and expanding aggressively, forcing neighbouring cities into alliance until equilibrium was restored. Over centuries, this pattern became almost formalised in itself. Eventually, the port city of Rijudjya gained a special status in the West Continent, becoming the "ceremonial capital" where oligarchs could meet, sign treaties, and attempt to assert Ku'densharll over each other.
