Irphothe is either a vacuum world or one with a tainted atmosphere. The system has a population between 100 million and a billion sophonts. This a low technology world with technology competency below the standard for Charted Space. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Shallows Subsector of Dagudashaag Sector and in the Domain of Vland. Irphothe, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight and the fiefdoms of a marquis and a viscount. All three are members of the Imperial Nobility charged with overseeing the world. This world contains an Imperial Scout Base, capable of handling Scout Service starships and personnel. 10% of the world's population is the Uplifted Race Dolphin. During the Long Night this world was named Mimak.

Astrography and planetology[edit]

History and background[edit]

Irphothe has become the low-tech retreat for the discontented in the subsector. Originally colonized by the Vilani in the early years of the Ziru Sirka, Irphothe attracted those who had their fill of the hurly-burly of the growing empire. The world was only marginally habitable even at the time of the first explorations but now the fragile biosphere is beginning to collapse under the steady population increase. The vast seas have become the low-cost dumping grounds for many of the large corporations of the region. The pollution is now reaching critical levels, causing the atmosphere to be designated as tainted.

Local Population: Dolphins[edit]

Irphothe is now home to a significant population of Dolphins, one of the furthest known coreward enclaves. Backed by wealthy concerns rimward (it is even rumored that Solomani money is involved) the Dolphins have bought the commercial exploitation rights to the seas in an attempt to halt the environmental damage. This has involved restricting access to many areas and banning dumping. This has led to a number at clashes between Irphothe residents (who on the whole support the Dolphins) and some starship captains who have attempted to circumvent the new proactive environmental laws and discharge their illegal cargoes.

Languages[edit]

  • Anglic
  • Delphinic Trinary
    • This language, also known as Delphinese, involves various clicks, rasps, chirps, creaks, hoots and whistles. Due to the spread of Dolphins across Charted Space, it has evolved into a multitude of dialects. It can take a Dolphin some time to learn a new dialect; errors are often seen by both parties as humorous.
    • For communication with humans and other races, most Dolphins speak ordinary, if flowery, Anglic.
  • Vilani (language)
