Haes is a poor, nonindustrial world.

  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • This world has few prospects for economic development.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Spinward Drift Subsector of Beyond Sector.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

The surface is mostly covered by desert and salt flats from an evaporating sea.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

The world's atmosphere has been leaking into space for billions of years, destroying the ecosystem. Currently the most prevalent surface vegetation is a yellow lichen-like crust. The shallow sea features mats of anaerobic bacteria.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Haes is located on a trade route connecting Homeward and Goal Terminus.

Haes was settled in 840 by prospectors, supported by entrepreneurs intent on building a starport, though there was never enough traffic to justify one. In 990, a group of dissidents from Eromnek settled in the shantytown beside the "port". The original settlers and the Eromnek immigrants never truly integrated, but their antipathy was usually non-violent.

In 1087, Renata the Heretic -- a deserter from the Zydarian Codominium Star Legion -- arrived with three ships and eighty heavily armed followers. Renata established Haes as a base to raid the worlds of the Hefrin Colony. In revenge for their exile, the Eromneki locals backed her efforts; the original settlers did not. In 1090, six days of open warfare saw one of Renata's ships destroyed, but established the pirate and her forces as rulers of the "Heretic Free State of Haes". Renata, now styling herself Grand Admiral, has since acquired two new ships. She is careful not to cause enough disruption to trigger intervention from Jarnac or Nakris, and Zydar seems to have forgotten her, but worlds within a few jumps of Haes are often victims of her corsair activities.

World Starport[edit]

Haes has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

World Population (P)[edit]

Haes has a population of 300,000 sophonts (hundreds of thousands).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Haes possesses a Technology Level of TL–6.

World Government (G)[edit]

Haes has a Captive Government or Colony. The world is ruled by an external government, there is no self-rule. This is a colony or conquered area. The local government is an oligarchy appointed by, and answerable only to, the external government.

  • Specifically, this world is under military rule by a junta of pirates and Eromneki militia leaders.

World Law (L)[edit]

Haes has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.
