The Cat is a creature lifeform that is not a sophont.

  • This is a native of Terra

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Cat is a carnivore once native to Terra (Solomani Rim 1827).

These creatures were domesticated prior to the expansion of the Solomani into space, and they have accompanied them from world to world. On these worlds, Feral species have subsequently developed.

Physiology & Ecology[edit]

The cat has a muscular body with powerful forelimbs, a large head and a tail that is about half the length of its body. Its coat is anything from dense and heavy to completely absent, and colouration varies between shades of orange and brown through to black and white Each cat is uniquely marked.

There is a notable sexual dimorphism between males and females, with the latter being consistently smaller than males. The size difference between males and females is proportionally greater in the large cat breeds. It has been hypothesised that body size of different cat populations may have been correlated with climate, or by distribution and size of available prey species.

The cat is mainly diurnal. It will climb trees and many breeds avoid water. Cats can be strong swimmers.

In the wild, cats mostly feed on small and creatures, particularly rodents introduced from Terra (Solomani Rim 1827).

Cats have long claws and teeth of up to 20mm long.

Individual cats are not usually considered dangerous but they may attack if threatened. They will attack surprised creatures of up to their own size.

Life Cycle & Reproduction[edit]

The cat mates all year round. They usually have between one and six kittens per litter with an average of three. They reach sexual maturity at 5-10 months.

Cats can live for several decades, but most survive less than one.

Diet & Trophics[edit]

Cats are Carnivores hunting from Ambush.

Their only predators are Sophonts, or still larger predators on those planets where they have been introduced.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Cats are native to Terra (Solomani Rim 1827) and accompanied the Solomani into space. The creatures have spread throughout the Imperium and beyond. They are not generally present in Aslan, Hiver or K'kree space - but have spread across the Zhodani Consulate.

The first Cat to make it into space is said to be a Ginger Tom called Jones aboard a Terran vessel named the Nostromo. The story may well be apocryphal.

Derived Products (Goods)[edit]

Cats are traded as pets and as efficient hunters for colonies experiencing problems with small creature infestations.

Many worlds can supply vacuum proof cat-transport boxes at their spaceports.

Travellers' Aid Society Advisory[edit]

Cats are a non-dangerous creature to most sophonts, unless provoked. They have a TAS green advisory.

Species Notes[edit]

Cats have been subject to numerous genetic modifications - particularly affecting their coat colour and density and their and eye colour. The long-period isolation of small populations has also resulted in natural selection of specific sub-breeds on particular worlds. The inter-fertility of these breeds can not be guaranteed and purchasers seeking off-world Cats for breeding purposes should consider this when making their purchases.

See in particular Ship's Cat for varieties intended to live aboard spaceships, space stations, and other sealed habitats where the outside is a hostile environment.
