Ansirk is a vacuum world, with no atmosphere or hydrosphere. The system supports a population of fewer than 10,000 sophonts. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Lamas Subsector of Deneb Sector and in the Domain of Deneb. Ansirk, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight, a member of the Imperial Landed Nobility who acts as an Imperial representative to the world. This world has a nearby Imperial Naval Base, capable of handling warships.
Description (Planetology)[edit]
Ansirk is a hot, small fragment of a planet that was blown inward when its parent flew apart and now has an eccentric orbit, one orbit inward from the habitable zone. Ansirk has a diameter of 1,600 kilometres and a circumference of 5,020 kilometres, with a surface gravity of 0.1 G. It has a year of 235 standard days; its actual day length is 21 hours. It has no moons. Average temperature is 40 ºC during the day and –10 ºC at night[2].
A larger (size 5) fragment of the original world lies on the other edge of the habitable zone; it has an insidious atmosphere, is not habitable and has been interdicted by the IISS[2][3].
Stellar Data[edit]
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Clearly a chunk of a larger body, Ansirk is rugged and non-regular like a planetoid but with the size of a small planet. Scientists estimate its gravity will conform it into a sphere within a few million years. The worldlet has no atmosphere or surface water, though some ice pockets have been located and claimed as critical assets by the starport authority for life support and fuel use[2].
Ansirk was chosen for the Downport because of rich and varied veins of useful metals and radioactives that were found on the surface, access to which is helped by the world’s low gravity[2]. However, exploitation has not yet begun despite a series of plans put forward by various corporations and governments. Each one has stalled at the negotiation stage, usually over disagreements about profit-sharing and taxation[3].
Worlds such as Ansirk would not normally be worth colonising, but a small community lives on the worldlet to prevent the region's ambitious world governments or noble houses laying claim to the world, which would in turn create legal issues regarding ownership of the starport. The existence of this population is something of a fiction, with few being born on Ansirk proper, but all residents have citizenship of the world even if they are essentially professional residents who will eventually move on to another world[3].
Ansirk Starport is far more important than the world it orbits, as it serves x-boat routes as well as local trade routes. It is very rare for vessels to visit the world’s small and basic landing area, except to resupply the outpost. Most ships dock at the orbital facility, moving on without going planetside. Although highly automated, the port has a population of several thousand workers not considered citizens of Ansirk itself but encouraged to apply for citizenship, and automatically accepted if they do. The majority are simply employees or business owners who work at Ansirk Starport but call some other world home[3].
Ansirk Down is a clean, modern starport displacing approximately 5,000 tons. Routine operations of the starport are automated, from navigational buoys and fuel stations to maintenance and repair. A lone dormitory has rooms available for ship’s crew and a single cafeteria of dubious quality serves food and has a small attached grocery. The starport’s orbital component is a large array of orbital solar collectors, which power the main functions of the downport, while auxiliary power plants are on hand as backups or for special purposes. The starport is capable of building starships; typically it does not[2]. Instead, its modest yards turn out small craft and fighters for a variety of clients, with a training staff maintained to certify pilots and crew. Most designs are standard but recently Ansirk Starport has begun recruiting test pilots for an experimental fighter program[3].
Primarily a military station, it is operated under a civilian licence to train non-military personnel in small craft operations. The bulk of the training programs at Ansirk are for skilled personnel and focuses on operations under hazardous circumstances. Popular flight training programs include Rampart close operations, Gig and Armed Launch tactics and Fast Pinnace training. Visitors, students and personnel are all assumed to be adults and responsible for their own behaviour. Problems are dealt with expeditiously and sometimes fairly: troublemakers have been known to be put on the surface without a vacc suit[2].
Tukera Lines operates offices and maintenance facilities on Ansirk[4], while Ling-Standard Products operates a shipyard on the world[5].
Some 20 Naval personnel on Ansirk undertake small starship design and construction; several are test pilots. Another 20 to 30 provide basic facilities for the inhabitants and for civilian travelers. The economy is supported by a vast store of refined fuel, scooped and refined from the gas giant which Ansirk orbits. The Navy uses the system for test maneuvers - their presence discourages pirates. Security robots are commonly armed with FGMP-15s and other efficient weapons[6].
