Metanu is a poor, pre-industrial hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.
- Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants.
- This world would like to become a major industrial powerhouse in the subsector, but lacks the population and resources to build an adequate workforce and industrial business sector.
- This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below standard for Charted Space.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Esqua Subsector of Far Home Sector.
- Metanu is a Voluntarily Regressive World

System data
The primary is Tasmal, an ordinary orange main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.352 Sols, a mass of 0.774 Sols and a diameter of 1.168 million km. Tasmal's inner zone consists of (II) a standard atmosphere desert world – orbital position (I) is empty. (III) Metanu orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (IV) a rocky vacuum world and (VI) an exotic atmosphere world form the outer zone – orbital position (V) is empty. Metanu, the inner desert world and the outer exotic atmosphere world retain satellites.
The companion is Arlam, an ordinary red main sequence star that orbits Tasmal at a mean separation of 79.1 AU and has an orbital period of approximately 800 years. It has a luminosity of 0.04 Sols, a mass of 0.489 Sols and a diameter of 764,000 km. (I) a thin atmosphere world orbits in the habitable zone. (II) a rocky vacuum world and (III) a dense rocky planetoid belt form the outer system. Neither world retains satellites.
(III) Metanu
(I) Metanu is designated the mainworld. It orbits Tasmal at a mean distance of 0.69 AU (103.2 million km), within the systems habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 237 days 23 hours and has a rotation period of 18.5 hours. The axial tilt is 8 degrees. Metanu has a diameter of 7,877 km, a density of 5.44 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.61 G. Tidal stresses cause geological activity and seismic events are common. Its atmosphere is rated as Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.66 bar and a composition of 84% nitrogen, 15% oxygen, and 1% argon, carbon dioxide, neon and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the low percentage of atmospheric oxygen. Approximately 20% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges are around 0.5m. Mean surface temperature: 13°C. The atmosphere is active and weather systems, driven by the star and the geography, cross the globe. The world's climate is seasonal and follows predictable patterns.

World starport
Metanu has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.
World technology level
Metanu possesses a Technology Level of TL–3.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Printing press, the mechanical telegraph, and the first audio recordings.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Coal or other simple hydrocarbon fuels and early steam engines.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Bicycles and early steam coaches with advanced roadways.
- Water: Advanced sailing and early steam engine ships.
- Air: The earliest hot air balloons.
