History & Background (Dossier)
Cadet is a rank held by prospective marine officers during their training at a Naval Officer Training Corps at a Civil College to become commissioned officers. The term originated on ancient pre-industrial Terra from the practice of placing "marks of cadence" upon the coats-of-arms of the younger sons of an arms-bearer, the younger sons being said to belong to "cadet-lines" of the family. As these younger sons normally possessed no prospective inheritance, they would often enter into military service as a commissioned officer-in-training at a military academy, where they were known as "cadets".
Members of the Imperial Naval Academy intending to enter the Imperial Marines will also be ranked as Cadets.
