Umemii is a poor, moderate population non-agricultural and pre-industrial hellworld with a population, over a hundred million, but not yet at a billion sophonts, struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often develop intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • This world is unable to produce quality foodstuffs and must import them.
  • It is a world working towards greater industrial capability, but currently lacks an adequate population to expand its industrial sector.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Borderland Subsector of Trojan Reach Sector.

Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]

Umemii seems to have been heavily volcanic at some time in the distant past. Its characteristic terrain is rocky badlands cut by canyons and deep trenches. Between these lie treacherous dust pools and areas of jumbled boulders. In recent times tectonic and volcanic activity have both reduced greatly.

  • Tabik Sea: The world's largest body of water, at the bottom of the Tabik Depression. The Tabik Sea is little more than 50 metres deep in most places.

History & Background / Dossier[edit]

There are numerous nation-states on Umemii, typically calling themselves principalities, duchies and counties. Few have an offworld presence. The exception, and by far the most powerful, is the Grand Duchy of Requille, which fields a powerful system defense flotilla and a modest fleet of gunship carriers.

Umemii was the setting for the episode Rock on the Rift's Edge in a notoriously melodramatic entertainment series. The show portrayed Umemii as a sinisterly flawed pseudo-utopia with a dark secret, which to this day is all most people in the Third Imperium "know" about the world.

World Starport[edit]

Umemii has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

Urbanization[edit]

Each city-state and small nation has a spaceport equivalent to Class C or D, and almost all welcome offworld visitors.

World Technology Level[edit]

Umemii possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World Government[edit]

Umemii has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.

Nations include the following:

  • Grand Duchy of Requille: More a corporation with its headquarters on Umemii and holdings elsewhere than a true nation; either way, the most powerful political entity on the planet.
  • Darix Confederation: An association of several large towns and small cities.
  • Essfaiyer: This city state is the largest Vargr territory in the region.
  • Silddaine: A nation that consists of two small cities, Over Silddaine and Nether Silddaine. It is the only one of Umemii's larger states not located on the higher continents.
  • Umemii Prime: The state that tries hardest to attract ships to its port. It has little to export other than TL-6 small arms, which flood the markets on nearby worlds whenever a ship has passed through.
