Shiro is a low-population world with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts in size.

Description / Astrography & Planetology[edit]

Shiro orbits a main sequence G6 V star, dubbed "Kethinarii" on the star charts of the First Imperium. The native word for their sun is unpronounceable to Humans, but translates roughly as "light giver".

Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]

The most populous continent is Earipida, where most Hana Saka live. The tall mountains of its north drain through a huge, naturally-navigable river system through fertile plains to the equatorial oceans. The bulk of the planet's Human population -- who are commonly the only ones listed in modern Solomani census -- reside on a northern continent, Ausipica, around several large, inland lakes. Ausipica is generally colder than what Hana Saka find comfortable, but well within Human tolerance.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

There is an extensive ecology of plant and animal life. The only sparsely vegetated areas are the frozen poles.

Instead of an internal skeleton, minute calcium deposits in each cell provide much of Shiro's fauna an intricate network of thin supporting "bones" throughout the body. Not nearly as strong as Human bones, but pliable and difficult to break, this configurable net allows the formation of "joints" anywhere on a limb as desired.

Animal life includes Krakentras', giant, amphibious worms with a number of legs rivalling a centipede, used by the natives to haul goods over a long stretch of ocean.

Native Sophont[edit]

Proto-Hana Saka took their nourishment directly from the ocean, straining the shore waters for microorganisms and multi-cell plants. Much of the impetus to move to the land was a regional collapse of that nutritional source, due to solar flare activity or some other widespread phenomenon. The proto-Hana Saka always had the ability to wash ashore with the tides onto small, slow-moving beach dwellers, smothering them and secreting digestive juices for later filtration. Desperate for additional food sources, the proto-Hana Saka turned to this food source more and more, leading eventually to more sophisticated sojourns onto the land in search of food, becoming a terrestrial species.

History & Background / Dossier[edit]

The first Vilani explorers arrived here before the Long Night, when the native Hana Saka were populous but still at a low tech level. The first five contact vessels belonged to a single Imperial corporation, which elected to keep a distance from the Hana Saka, setting up an agricultural and research base on an isolated northern continent. Almost no Hana Saka left Shiro during the period of contact with the Vilani. The few who did were specimens for Imperial research and either perished or were later returned.

During the Long Night, trading between stranded Humans and early Hana Saka raft communities forged a cooperative relationship between the species. The Hana Saka, however, saw Humans as a threat to their world dominance and, for centuries, tried to keep them on the northern continent. Subtle pressures were applied to discourage expansion, which appear to have worked in the long run. The Human Union was its own distinct corporate nation.

Eventually, the Solomani Confederation encompassed the world; given its joint Vilani-nonHuman heritage, it has been not too subtly suppressed in the political forum of the sector.

World Government[edit]

The Human government is a corporate bureaucracy, known simply as the Human Union, and nearly 40% of the population is employed by them directly. They historically enjoyed a slightly higher technological level than the Hana Saka, but not overwhelmingly so.

World Demographics[edit]

The listed population is the Human nation (originally of Vilani descent, in time largely replaced by Solomani); the native Hana Saka are more populous.

World Culture[edit]

Among the Hana Saka, females take all positions of responsibility and authority, from government to industry to the family level, including trades and industrial labour pools. Males have lives of comparatively little responsibility, and seldom make a prolonged contribution to society other than to wander, mingle, and serve to propagate the race.

Urbanization[edit]

Architecturally, Hana Saka households tend to be very open. Doors are rare between rooms, and in moderate climes, so are walls. Larger structures have long patios and gardens opening onto functional rooms. Sleep chambers are large pits of cushions; Hana Saka typically sleep here in groups.

Raft communities are found in some regions of Shiro. Modern versions can have as many as a hundred households, all on wood- and steel-made boats lashed or welded together.
